One topic written about a lot in the area of business personal development is that of GOALS. The reason for this is simple: having goals is essential if you want to achieve success intentionally in your life.
For the business owner, goals are what keep us focused and on target. Not only should you be setting goals for your business but also reviewing them frequently. Sometimes it helps to approach the subject in a fresh way. Here’s a way for you to do just this.
I came across “The Ten Goal Method” recently in a teaching by personal development guru, Brian Tracy. He points out that this method works like magic if you follow the steps below exactly.
Step 1:
On a sheet of paper, write a list of ten goals. They must be written in the following way: Start the goal with “I” because the goal is yours and personal. You must own it from the start.
Next add an action verb; words that express an action associated with you.
Write it in the present tense as if you have already achieved it and keep it short, snappy and positive.
Lastly include a due date.
Some examples might be: “I generate ten leads a day by the end of March” and ” I write a blog post three times a week by March 20th.
Step 2:
Now apply the magic wand exercise. If you could wave a magic wand and have only one goal on your list of ten come true within 24 hours, which would it be? Go back and underline the goal you have chosen.
Step 3:
Write your chosen goal at top of a new sheet of paper including the due date. This will become your major definite purpose.
Underneath write all the actions you can think of to achieve that goal. Next organize the list by sequence and priority and then do something everyday from that list.
Keep the original list of goals somewhere safe but your focus goal must be what you think about all day, every day. You will be amazed just how successful you can be using this method and there is every chance you will achieve at least eight of the ten goals on your list. More importantly, when you achieve your focus goal you will know for definite that you can achieve any goal.
The great Confucius said, “A journey of a thousand leagues begins with a single step.” Writing goals is what will help you to know what step to take first.
Brian Tracy also says that if he could only convey one thought that would help you to be more successful, he would tell you to “write down your goals, make plans to achieve them, and work on your plans every single day.”Now you have a simple but effective way to do this. Will you take action?
I ‘d love to know more about your experiences with goals and if you have any questions you’d like answered so please leave me a comment at the end of this post.
Remember my goal is helping you achieve yours!

Hey Jordan,
This method works like a dream especially if you want to focus on one area principally. Often we have too many goals and we end up not focusing well enough on any of them. Thanks.

G’day Marcus!
TERRIFIC post you have written – I have retweeted it. It is so powerful when setting goals to state it in the present tense… particularly when you associate a date with the goal, because our subconscious WANTS to meet that goal.
Another method I also like to use for goals is both Brian Tracy’s idealisation method and Mark Victor Hansen’s Virtualisation method.
Thank you for sharing this post Marcus… I always love reading your work.

Setting the right goals is something I think a lot of people struggle with. Hard to imagine getting over/underwhelmed with this though. Nice post Marcus.
I’m actually finishing up Darren Hardy’s Best 10 Years of Your Life program right now, and goal setting is… well, it’s all about goal setting! And Darren Hardy is the man!

Hey thanks for passing on the tip about Darren Hardy and goals Garrett! I agree with you I think setting goals is pretty straightforward if one just keeps it simple and as long as the goal is something one is sure one wants to achieve.

I know you did not intend this to be an all encompassing personal development post and your goals are a great start. I do tend to encourage people to start with identifying what their limiting beliefs are. If we all can create anything in our lives, and we are in fact doing that right now, then what would you create?
Very nice post Marcus,
Michael

Nice and useful tips. In my experience, one of the best goal setting method I’ve ever used is the S.M.A.R.T Technique. To formulate a goal, it must be:
S- Specific
M- Measurable
A- Attainable
R- Realistic
T- Time bounded
I learn this technique from a seminar I attended about goal setting. This is very useful in formulating challenging but still attainable goals, and I agree that goals helps us to become focused and on target. What you are suggesting in your post is similar to the SMART technique such as establishing time lines, etc.

Nice strategy. I think #1 is most important because if you don’t write them down, you will forget them.

Hi Larry,
Welcome! Yes I couldn’t agree more. Research has shown that those who write goals down are more likely to achieve them.
