We have just moved into the second quarter of 2010 so in this business personal development post I’d like to encourage you to score your business results for the first 25% of the year.
How did you do? Better than expected? Half as well? Maybe you exceeded your goals? Are you wondering why you’ve not done well despite your efforts?
Whatever your results, you are totally responsible for them.
If you felt even the slightest bit of resistance to my last statement then you can also be sure you are wanting to lay blame anywhere other than at your feet. I know because I was once very good at this!!
“But I did my best. I was really enthusiastic when I started out and somehow stuff just got in the way. I don’t even know how it happened.”
This is how someone I’m working with expressed it when I asked why they hadn’t achieved as well as they had hoped. I understood completely because I used to feel the same way about goals of mine that I did not achieve. You might even be feeling the same way about your results in one or more areas of your life? Maybe your business results?
The explanation for why this happens can be simplified which I will do although it’s a very complex topic so one blog post is not going to do it justice.
Why does this happen?
We create goals with good intentions but we set these at a conscious level of course. The problem is that what we achieve is not driven by our conscious minds alone. We have a very powerful unconscious mind that determines our conscious behavior.
If we only work at the conscious level and are not in touch with what’s happening at an unconscious level then of course we will find it difficult to understand why we didn’t succeed. Rather than find the real culprit and deal with it, our unconscious, we become defensive, pointing fingers at everything and everybody other than ourselves.
“Aye aye Captain” or “Captain who?”
Recently I came across an excellent analogy to explain this which affects each and every one of us. Your conscious mind is like the captain of a ship. As the captain makes decisions so you make decisions at a conscious level. However the captain does not run the ship on his own. He has a crew.
If the captain took a decision to drop anchor, who would do the actual job? The crew of course. So what would happen if the crew did not work together with the captain? The anchor would not be dropped and the ship would continue on its way despite the captain’s good intentions. Your unconscious mind is like the crew of the ship.
What happens when the captain of a ship and his crew cannot work together? One word – MUTINY! When the relationship between your conscious and unconscious minds is not in alignment then you too have mutiny happening and so it happens that you create goals, have intentions and make decisions that you often don’t achieve.
Most Times It’s Not About Setting Better Goals…
What most people do is think they have to find a different or better way to set goals and while there may be a better way it’s only when you also give attention to your unconscious mind that you’re going to see a difference.
How Should We Do This?
It’s an ongoing journey of personal development and the approaches are diverse and many. It’s for this reason that personal development is so important. You can have all the marketing knowledge and skills in the world, if you don’t have the power over your mind that is required, it’s highly unlikely that you will succeed. Unfortunately most people think they need better marketing training when in fact they are not addressing the real issue.
There Is Always A Way…
Whatever you’re getting in your life, like it or not, you’ve played a part in attracting at an unconscious level. This is what the law of attraction is about. So if you don’t like what you’re getting how do you change this? You have to learn how to change what you’re vibrating at an unconscious level.
I learned how to take better control of this in my life from author and teacher, Michael Losier whose book, Law of Attraction: The Science of Attracting More of What You Want and Less of What You Don’t has had a profound influence on my life. What he teaches is not new but he has the gift of taking a complex topic and simplifying it in such a way that one can apply his teaching practically on a daily basis.
A Gift For You…
I can highly recommend his work which is why I also want to pass on to you a free tele-seminar he did on the 1st day of 2010. He has a unique and very humorous way of teaching and in this one hour class will teach you how you can get more of what you want and less of what you don’t want in life. He also tackles the subject of goals in a unique way that will help you to approach your goals differently.
If there was a way to help you get to the end of the next quarter and feel happier about your achievements, would you you be interested? There is. Just click on the picture below and get ready to receive masses of value. Take notes and apply what you learn and change what’s not working. It’s all up to you. Are you willing to take responsibility?
I’d love to hear your feedback! Leave me a comment and do please spread the word by clicking the “Bookmark and Share” button below, or by sharing it on Facebook & re-tweeting it on Twitter above.
Come back tomorrow when I’ll have a post about why and how you MUST collect statistics on your blog.
My goal? Helping you achieve yours!

Hey Marcus,
You’re right, whatever happened last quarter was on our own shoulders. We attracted it in one way or another.
That isn’t to say that bad things don’t sometimes happen, despite our best efforts. But most of the time, it’s up to us.
Hard facts to face sometimes. This is a great post!
I’ll have to watch that video now.
Make it a great day!

Yes sometimes things do happen that are out of our control but we still always have a choice of how we respond to these events. Thanks Susanna.

I think it just a matter of wanting something so bad that you are willing to do whatever it takes to get it, as long as its ethical and legal of course. People give up too quick and they look at the road ahead and not the end result.
I have to agree, Whatever your results are its because of you.
