Don’t you just love it when realizations pour in to confirm that what you’re doing is right on track?? Today presented me with such an epiphany, not once but three times….
In this Business Personal Development post I want to share three things with you that I learned while being away from my business today.
A good friend of mine gave me the gift of book keeping software and a course to go with it as a Christmas gift. I’ve avoided doing anything with this till now but since the course expires at the end of the month I thought it would be ungrateful of me not to at least do the one day business book keeping program.
Today was it!!
I always wake up excited, in anticipation of spending another new day helping others and growing my business. This morning was no exception although I knew I would be doing something very different for the day.
As I made my way across the busy early morning city I was as usual full of the joys of life.
I soon became aware that I was pretty much alone with my joy!
I had joined the ranks of what seemed like thousands of faceless worker ants all heading in a trance like state to wherever they had to be. There were no smiles, heads were down and everyone was in a frenzied rush to get to wherever they were going. How horrible.
I realized I had forgotten how stressful it is to be a part of the job force routine. Immediately I was reminded of how blessed I am not to have to earn my living in this way. How fortunate I am to be able to work from home, never have to push and jostle my way though crowds twice a day and then spend the time in between doing something I don’t enjoy.
Lesson no 1 reminded me to be very grateful for the amazing opportunity I have to be doing what I do. The alternative is not an option.
At the course, everybody had to introduce themselves and say what they did for living. Out of ten people I was the only business owner. Come the first tea break and suddenly I had eight very eager people surround me, wanting to know more about what I did. As I spoke to them I was reminded not only of the fact that there are so many people desperate to escape their circumstances but that we hold the key to help many of these to live empowered lives.
Lesson no 2 was being reminded that I personally can and do make a difference to many people’s lives. Knowing what I do, it is my responsibility to share this so that those who are ready can take the step. This is why I am where I am.
By the end of the day I had learned a great deal about business accounting that I didn’t know but more importantly I learned that I don’t want to be spending any time on doing my businesses books either, not because this is unimportant but because there are others who do love accounting and they will do it for me while I attend to what I love.
Lesson 3 was the realization that I really love what I do. I missed being away from my business today. It’s where I belong.
So what about you? Do you love your business despite the hard times? Do you miss it when you’re not doing it?
Do you understand that you are where you are because you have responded to a calling to empower yourself so that you can help others do the same? It’s an awesome responsibility and one that we should revere and love with all our hearts. If you don’t could it be that you are meant to be doing something else?
My goal? Helping you achieve yours!

Hey Marcus,
It’s important to do what you enjoy doing most. I personally don’t like accounting. That is why I pay my accountant to handle that task for me. I know just the basics. I really enjoy helping people getting recognize and growing their business using the internet. That is my passion and that is why some folks are willing to pay me to help them get seen on the internet. Great topic!
Chat with you later…

I couldn’t agree more Josh. The course was good since I know more about what I need to know so I can at least have an almost intelligent conversation with my accountant but accounting is not what I want to do or else I would have been one!

Hi Marcus,
I noticed the same thing about people when I was out and about this morning. No smiles, no hello back…just trudging along about their daily grind.
Isn’t it amazing how many people approached you during tea time? What does that tell us about life these days? Mainly that there are unfortunalty alot of people out there spending the largest time span of their life in a job that they dislike and an unhappy life due to it.
Keep up the great work!

Thanks Twila and you are so right. The sad thing is so many people think they have no alternatives. As I explained to a couple of people during the tea break yesterday, we all have options to change our lives but the question is whether people will do what it takes to do this?
They think they will but then when they start and the first hardship arises they crumble and think they can’t do it. This is why I maintain that anybody can learn how to market but not everybody will work hard enough on themselves so that they develop what it takes to keep doing it until they are successful.
Thankfully the industry does attract great leaders such as yourself to help people through these bumps!

Marcus,
You’ve just put a smile on my face. I was never in the hustle of rushing around to get to my job, because I worked very close to home, and also for the family business. We are very fortunate to not have to be in that hustle for a living. I can’t imagine coming home day after day just sick and tired of what I do, having never done a thing about it. You’ve made me smile my friend.

Thanks Jordan… what I realized is that working from home and doing we what we do, sometimes we forget just how horrible it is out there for so many people. Taking myself away from my business allowed me to get in touch with that “stressed out feeling” again, even at 8.30 in the morning which not only helped me to appreciate what I have more but emphasized the amazing difference we can make to other’s lives which is a far greater motivator than just making money. Always learning from you Jordan!!

Aloha Marcus, and mahalo, this is a great post about lovong what you do and gratitude, and being open minded.
I can relate, as I did tried so many things that I thought I loved, or could love, and discovered that what I loved was ONLY what I could get from doing it, instead of loving what it made me BE .
Great lesson today Marcus,
and I witness here that you are helping me for real, to become who i want to become. Thank you so much for encouraging me in your message on skype today, as well as many times since we know each other online!

Marcus, you are always so spot on with your posts. I know EXACTLY what you are saying. I actually find it strange now when I hear complaints from friends and family about workplaces, traffic and workplace disputes. It makes me appreciate my life as a business owner and living life on my own terms.
In gratitude,

I loved your “Away from your business” post, Marcus. It is refreshing to hear personal stories that have an impact on you and others.
I have noticed that people seem more uptight in their driving, and this just multiplies the negative attitudes. I can still be the one smiling and laughing, though.
A good friend of mine who once commented about the “drive-by shootings” in his city, said to combat them he gives “drive by blessings.” I always try to remember this when people are being rude. I just silently give them a blessing!

Your post reminds me of my “why” Marcus. Thanks for the reminder to be thankful. We all need to be a little more thankful, but more importantly, we need to express that thanks as well. Share the joy.

Hey Marcus
Great stuff man.
I am still part of the rat race, but I am on a pace to soon not be.
I love what I do part time and I know I will love it more when it will be providing me with the lifestyle I require.
When you love something it is impossible not to think about it all the time, that same is true in business. I miss it when I am not actively working on it.

Dwayne I can sense it won’t be for long my friend and you will be doing it full time too. I remember when I still held a job I used to find it really difficult to stay focused on my job because all I wanted was to to be working on what I love. It’s a great feeling.

As the saying says, the toughest thing in life is to identify what you want and what you enjoy doing. Once you identify it, life is in complete harmony and things will start happening.
I can see that you are in complete harmony with yourself. Hope we can help lot of people achieve harmony in their lives

That was very motivating especially the part where the people were surrounding you wanting to know what you did for a living. It was like they were begging for answers to get out their circumstances and your right we have the answers they are seeking if they ever got to the point to they really wanted make a change.
