Choosing the best keyword phrases for your network marketing article does not involve much more than a four step basic process which I am going to share with you here.
The best keyword phrases are the ones that will lead to your article being found. The simple truth of the matter is that unless your network marketing article comes up on the first page of the search results you have very little chance of someone ever reading it.
To increase your chances of this happening, the ideal is to find the highest number of searches with the lowest number of competing sites optimized for each of your profitable keywords.
This is is easier said than done and will require some keyword optimization skills, effort and creativity from you when it comes to choosing keywords.
In my experience if you choose top level type keywords that are very competitive like “network marketing” you may as well not even bother writing the article.
I believe you are better off looking for a number of related long tail keywords to use. These are keyword phrases that consist of more words about the topic and also tend to be more focused. An example might be “network marketing tips for beginners”.
The following four steps are based on this approach. It is not a definitive approach but one I have found to work which is why I am sharing it with you.
Step 1 – Brainstorm for the Best Keyword Phrases
You have an idea of what you want to write about so now you want to see if people are searching for this information and what terms they might use to do so.
Come up with a list of three to four word phrases that you think people would use if they were searching for the information. A good way to do this is to think about what you would search for if you wanted this information.
Step 2 – Refine Your Search for the Best Keyword Phrases
Submit all of the phrases in your brainstorming list to the Google AdWords Keyword Tool. When you click Get keyword ideas, the tool will return a long list of similar keyword phrases that people have actually been using as search terms.
Click the Local Search Volume column heading to sort the phrases from most searched to least searched.
Step 3 – Sort Your List to find the Best Keyword Phrases
Look at the keyword phrases that attract the highest search volume and least competition, and filter the list down to those that would make the most sense in your article.
Step 4 – Target Your List to find the Best Keyword Phrases
Choose one primary keyword phrase and two to four additional phrases from your filtered list to target in your article.
The primary keyword phrase should be the one that is as close as possible to what someone would use to look for the information in your article. The other phrases should be used to draw in readers who use variations of your primary phrase as their search queries.
These phrases will also help to round out your article and make it more readable.
Remember that you should not rely on keywords in a solitary article only but connect various pieces of content on the same topic using the same keywords to get the best results in the search engines.
Let’s hear some more ideas from those of you market successfully using articles and if you ‘re only starting out with this strategy and have some questions then post them in the comments section and those of us who can will do our best to answer them for you.

Marcus,
I personally like to have another person (someone not in the industry i.e. I use my wife and mom who are always searching for things) compile a list of keyword phrases used to find my website or product. You’d be surprised at the number of variations two minds can come up with instead of one. Think like a searcher – not a website owner. Nice Post.

Always try to target less competitive long tail keywords to start with. Once you get ranked for it, start optimizing your website for competitive keywords.

Marcus these are some great points get keywords down and start ranking for some and you will have a target audience that is looking for the information you offer which is powerful indeed. Aside from keywords I would advise on how people structure their articles to don’t use big blocks of words but 2-3 sentence paragraphs. Someone may find your article but if it reads like a novel they very well may move along.

Hi Marcus,
I use a similar strategy to yours. Brainstorm then work my way through the process by using Google Adwords Keyword tool.
The trick is to find the perfect balance between least competitive and highest search volume and to craft a free flowing article around these words. Like anything it takes time and practice to get it right.
Thanks for sharing.

Yes your right about finding these money words because most marketers understand that they have to find long tail keywords but they pick keywords that are so obscure that no one is searching for them enough for their article to get found.
Search volume is still important. One thing to add as well is the Avg PR of each of the top ten Pages ranking for your keyword. The lower the avg PR of the top ten the easier it is to leap frog them.
A kool free tool to get this information is call Traffic Travis.
I will let your vistors google the name to find the tool but the SEO Analysis feature will tell you the PR’s of each of the top 20 pages in google, the number of backlinks, the total backlinks of .gov and .edu, whether or not the site is listed in Dmoz, Yahoo directory and some handy other information.
Hope that helps

One thing maybe you can answer:
I’ve used the Google keyword tool extensively and also one other piece of free software called Web CEO (not sure if you’re familiar with it).
Each return wildly different values for monthly search volume – usually the data from Google is many times higher. Which would you think is likely to be closer to the real value?
Also one other thing – do you know if keyword order is represented properly on the Google keyword search tool? If I change around the order, it seems to return the same result, but I’d imagine that one sequence is more popular than another. For example:
‘Yellow Widgets’ &
‘Widgets Yellow’
often return the same monthly search volume, but I’d intuitively guess that one is more popular from the other. But I suspect Google rolls both results together in the keytool search volume. What do you reckon?

I see that you also suggest using the free Google Keywords Tool to do keyword research. In fact, I bought the Market Samurai but hardly use it although I know it is a very effective tool as well. But to have it powered up and to wait for it to return results is just so time consuming to me.
By the way, the steps you suggested above is more or less what I do as well when it comes to researching keywords.

Hi Liz,
Thanks for leaving a comment here.
There are so many conflicting thoughts about keywords depending on who you speak to.
I think it depends on what the keywords are for. When it comes to a new site one needs to use keywords that are being searched for at least 80-100 times a day with less than 30 000 competition.
Depending on the niche you’re in, this may well almost be an impossible combination for most primary keywords.
There is a widely believed thought that using a combination of long tail keywords (phrase type) with less searches and competition is more effective than focusing on primary keywords.
I use both of the above an while I have had success with some, there are many keywords I expected to be successful that weren’t.

Great article but you could also tell people that when it comes to keyword research and new sites, it pays to put up a post or page on a keyword with higher competition and let it age for a while. In the meantime work on low competition phrases as defined in the reply back to Liz above. As your site gets more authority in Googles eyes by ranking well for low competition phrases, your page with the high competition keyword is aging nicely and will eventually become much easier to rank. Yes Google ranks pages not sites but when the pages/posts are internally linked to well ranked posts it helps a lot

Hi Marcus, great tips on finding keywords. Like you, I´d prefer the long tail strategy. It´s much easier to rank high fast with the long keyword and increase your position with shorter variations over time. Then built some strong backlinks to your sites, e.g. in-content links on .edu blogs and you will see your site on front page of Google in no time.
