Blog commenting is a wonderful tool for building and expanding your influence, not to mention the huge networking possibilities it can lead to. There is however etiquette that MUST be observed when you leave comments on someone’s blog.
Remember a blog is someone’s ‘online home’. Just as you wouldn’t be inconsiderate when visiting someone at their actual home, the same should apply here. In this MLM Blogging Tips post I want to share with you what I believe are some etiquette tips when visiting and leaving comments on another blog.
1. Read the post before commenting
When bloggers invite comments they are looking for feedback that continues the discussion at hand. You can only put some effort into writing a response that adds to the conversation if you know what it’s about.
2. Keep to the topic
If the writer has provided guidelines for comments stick to this and don’t start conversing with another blogger via the comments section about something that has nothing to do with the discussion.
3. Respect rules
Some bloggers have an official commenting policy. Make sure you read and abide by it.
4. Express your opinion respectfully
It does not matter if your opinion differs BUT keep the debate civil and respectful. Speak from your point of view and don’t treat others as though they are idiots because they don’t agree with you.
5. Keep comments to a suitable length
Sometimes one does happen to write a longer comment than usual. This is fine as long as this does not become the norm. If you do find yourself writing an excessively long comment then think about writing your own post on the topic.
6. Do not add self promotional links to the body of your comments
This is usually regarded as spam. Most serious bloggers will have filters in place to weed this kind of comment out.If you do have a useful link to share, find a creative way to communicate this or better still invite people to write to you for details.
7. Identify yourself in some way
Essentially spammers are anonymous for obvious reasons so if you are not a spammer then have some kind of identity even i f this is a pen name.
Do you have some further etiquette tips to share? Do you disagree with any of my points? Perhaps you have a story about this topic you want to share? Please leave your comment as I’d love to hear what you have to say.
If you enjoyed this post, please share it with your followers on your social networks. Thank you.
My goal? Helping you achieve yours.

Thanks Marcus. You know I don’t understand why people even leave rude or mean comments! First of all because the person will most likely delete it anyway, and second of all it just makes you look like a jerk! Speaking of off topic comments, I also some chic tell me that my husband was hott . . . that was weird lol! Ttyl Marcus!

Ha ha Erin how funny! What a weird place to air that kind of information. Yes there really is little sense to leave rude comments and yet some people still delight in dong this.

Hi Marcus,
I appreciate the full post but the being respectful pointer especially resonates with me.
Don’t let your passion turn into rudeness. I’ve come across more than one flaming thread which reflects poorly on all those involved. Not exactly going to get backlink juice from these type of comments. If someone makes an emotionally-charged, negative comment on my blog I tell myself “I like chocolate, they like vanilla.” It’s just a different preference. The calm commenter realizes this and expresses their viewpoint in a tactful manner.
Wonderful insight, as always!

“I like chocolate, they like vanilla.” It’s just a different preference. I really like that approach Ryan!
I think it’s always a good idea to moderate comments before they are published too which means one can delete the malicious ones before they “infect” the energy.
Thanks for your comment.

Hey Marcus,
Cool points here. For me, the biggest one has to be reading before commenting.
I know I hate these generic comments some people leave to get a fast backlink.
Cheers for this.

Hi Wayne.
Yes I think this is the worst offense really. There is not way you can comment without reading someone’s post.

Hi Marcus,
You will be surprised how many people do it.
I have few blogs, I see that every day. people are replaying to my posts without reading it, some of them, just read the title and then comment.
Ben.

Hi Ben,
Well I guess there will always be those who take a chance. It’s a pity that they miss out on the true benefits of commenting.
~Marcus
Hey Marcus,
Commenting is just as important as the post itself. Love the guidelines you just mentioned. It is so important to follow this when visiting someones blog. Sometimes you can tell if someone is just commenting without reading the post. It looks funny since that comment does not line up with the post. Great Post!
Chat with you later…

Hey Marcus,
This is really good information. I really didn’t know the commenting etiquette when I first started commenting on blogs, so a post like this can especially help someone who is new.
Now we all know there are spammers and just plain rude people out there, but I think some of the beginners just do not know any better. But a post like you’ve shared here…now this will help them learn how to add real value to the post with their comments.
Another good one, my friend.
Have a great day,

I believe that you are spot on regarding the basic etiquette that needs to be adhered to. It is OK to have a difference of opinion but one does need to be civil when expressing themselves. In addition, I believe that it never hurts to let the authorknow what you liked about the article as well. It might give them ideas for future writings. Thanks for sharing.

Hey Marcus,
This is a really good post because I remembered I asked you a question about this very topic when I first joined the tribe. I have since gone form about 3 anchor text links to only one anchor text link that links to my cartoon bio. That seems to be accepted across the board:) It has also helped me come up with a training series for my coaching program where I teach my students the most effective places to leave certain types of anchor text. Wow…I just realized how much I have learned in such a short period of time. Thanks for this post.

Hi Marcus,
Excellent points! I like how you pointed out that when people visit our blog they actually visit our ‘online home.’
For the most part I haven’t had any problems with people commenting on my blog. They are usually very kind and professional.
Thanks for sharing those guidelines! I’ll pass them along.
Have a great day!

Marcus,
I try really hard not to be guilty of #5. I usually like to read the comments from others but sometimes it does get a bit out of hand when they write comments that seems like it could be another blog post. Also, this was great as some people can learn a lot from this.
Have a blessed day!

Great post, Marcus! It seems like those rules should be common sense, but as the saying goes “common sense isn’t so common”! Also some people may not be used to online etiquette and probably make honest mistakes. I know that I made my fair share when I first began to join online communities.

I’ve recently wanted to use trackbacks for my blog comments. Spammers have really hurt trackbacks. Your post has the trackback URI in a prominent place. Many do not. And those I have found- including my own- send trackback comments to the spam bin. People need to realize that a comment with value will have a home on a good blog post. Spam will not last, so why waste the time- automated or not?

Thank you so much for this. It seems that blogging etiquette is something that should be common sense for people and yet people continue to spam and leave very rude comments.
Once again.. I am glad this is topic that keeps getting brought up.. looks like so many of us need the reminders of how one should act when blogging. Thank you again.

Well, I’ve read a lot of articles on the issue and the main conclusion I have come to is that blog commenting etiquette tips are uncountable. The new website the new tip. Must confess that some of them really make no sense. They can be identified as whims or carping from bloggers rather than generally accepted rules. I don’t mean your tips now. They are quite logical and consistent. I mean such tip as “Make Paragraphs” for example. It makes me furious. Seems as though bloggers don’t need readers’ comments and can hardly stand them so that are made to create different commenting rules and etiquette. In fact, the number of comments identifies the quality of a blog. All of us must remember, websites and blogs are primarily created for visitors who have a right to comment on them the way they prefer.

Marcus, excellent post.
Oh before i make my main comment, i notice you respond to all comments, this for me is unusual but very welcome (let it be a lesson to other bloggers). Obviously blog owners like yourself like to read comments on the posts you write, but a contributer like myself like to know there comment is read also.
Just realised i’m straying off topic (point 2)
Anyway, i agree with all your points, but i like the idea about writing posts if you are someone like me who tends to ramble on a bit, rather than keeping it short.

Thank you for the feedback and great to have you visit again and leave a comment.
I do like reading comments and replying to all of them as they are all important to me.
So many people add even more value to the posts in their comments so I learn from reading these.
Also I am often inspired to write new posts from reading comments too.
