Do You Ask Your Prospects This Revealing Question? | MLM Tips
This MLM Tips post comes courtesy of an AHA moment I had this morning while doing some voluntary teaching.
Every couple of months I help train a new intake of volunteers for a phone counseling service that operates in Australia.
Today I asked the group I was training to tell me about a time when they had taken on a challenge of some kind, why it had been challenging, how they had approached the situation and what the outcome had been.
The experiences were as diverse as the group. Some found it difficult to think of anything to say while others shared very significant events like learning to walk again after a car accident, dealing with dyslexia, and walking the Kokoda Track.
The first two don’t need much explanation but the Kokoda Track probably will. This refers to a single-file foot path that runs 96 Kilometers (60 Miles) overland through the Owen Stanley Range in Papua New Guinea, some of the most difficult jungle terrain in the world. The track is the most famous in Papua New Guinea and is renowned as the location of the World War II battle between Japanese and Australian forces in 1942.
Each person’s story was totally unique as was the way in which each had dealt with their particular challenge. There was however something common to all the experiences. Every one of them had to confront their fears and self limiting beliefs and had to overcome these in whatever way they could.
Interestingly enough those who shared the toughest challenges were the ones who had stayed with theirs until they had been successful.
Later while doing some further leadership type activities, guess who emerged as the natural leaders? That’s right, the ones who had been through the toughest experiences and succeeded.
I believe every one of these leaders would have the potential to be successful in business too because they know how to navigate though the hard times that is a part of the process to becoming successful. Naturally they would need to satisfy another factor too. They would need to have some powerful reasons for why they wanted to be successful in business.
This got me thinking that it might be a good idea to ask a similar question of prospects when interviewing them. There is no getting away from the fact becoming successful in business is a challenge but I believe if people have been through a tough challenge in some other area of their lives before and truly want to be successful in business then it ‘s likely that you will have identified a leader for your business.
Leave me a comment and let me know what you think about asking prospects a question like this. Also if you enjoyed this post please share it with your followers on your social networks. Thank you.
My goal? Helping you achieve yours.

Hi Dwayne,
Yes that is a good point too. One wants to try and find out as much as one can about someone as soon as possible. Thanks for your comment.

That is some great insight Marcus,
I have never thought of that but now that you mention it, you may have a point. A lot of very, very successful people have had major challenges in their lives. I have dealt with major issues as well. It does seem like a common theme among leaders.
I am going to ponder this some more. Great post.

Hi Fred,
Agree with you. Of course it does not mean that someone who has never encountered a challenge would not be successful just that chances are that someone who has might find it a lot easier to see it through to the end.

I believe this is an awesome idea Marcus.
Some people don’t know their true worth until asked a question like this. It’s a wake-up call which builds confidence because prior to being asked the person might not have realized the amazing obstacles which they overcame to become successful.
Sometimes we don’t give ourselves enough credit and it takes an outside source to help us realize this fact.

Hi Ryan,
Absolutely. By remembering that one does have what it takes to overcome obstacles means that one can do it again. The only reason why you wouldn’t do so is because you are meant to be doing something else.
Thanks for your comment.

Hey Marcus,
Tactfully approaching the subject might help you spot potential leaders.
It might also could backfire.
Asking a group of counseling volunteers about challenges they faced is a bit different from asking a prospect.
It could be perceived as being too forward. Trying to get too much, too soon.
Good point for debate, though. I just though of a third way it could go.
Meet in the middle, you get less sign ups, but the ones you get will be movers and shakers.
Guess it needs to be tested.

Hi Mike,
You may have a point and like you say one would need to test it.
One thing I will say is I thoroughly interview people I take on to work with me. I don’t want to waste my time with people who definitely don’t have what I am looking for. I don’t think it’s any different to a job interview in this respect.
A problem I see all too often is people are so desperate to get a sign up and the $49.95 or whatever it is that they earn that they will take on absolutely anybody. I see no point to this in the long term.
Thanks for adding your perspective to the discussion.

Hi Marcus,
I feel like the devil’s advocate here. Oh well, the world would be boring if everyone agreed on everything.

Ha ha.. not at all. I like a differing opinion Mike. There’s no right or wrong answer here at all. What works for one may not work for another and I agree with you when you say one would have to ask the question in the right way so as not to intimidate the person.

Hey Marcus
I can imagine some of the great stories you will hear if you do ask the question.
