Had Aesop Read The Secret

Aesop-fables-rare-Book-bookcoverOliver Tausend recently featured an Aesop’s fable as a discussion starter on his blog. What a creative blog post idea!  It’s also what led to my writing this post.

The Goose That Laid The Golden Eggs is a well known story which imparts as all Aesop’s fables do, a moral to be learned.

The question Oliver posed at the end of his post was:

“What other interpretations or misinterpretations of this ancient Greek fable are possible and how could they influence our thoughts, attitudes, emotions and actions regarding wealth and poverty consciousness ?”

The comments that followed are well worth reading and if you are not familiar with this fable then I encourage you to click on the above link and take a listen, since this post will make a lot more sense then.

In my thinking about Oliver’s question I pondered how differently this fable may have been had Aesop read The Secret and wanted to use it to teach the law of attraction.

In my comment to Oliver I remarked on this saying I felt inspired to re-write it with this in mind. Oliver encouraged me to do so and here it is. I’ve called it simply…

The Unlimited Goose…

A man and woman once owned a very special goose. It was so because every day it laid a golden egg which made the man and woman very rich.

“My wife I have no idea how this goose lays a golden egg every day but I have every reason to believe it will continue. How blessed we are. Let’s make sure we always let the goose know how pleased we are with her.”

Every morning when the man and woman found another golden egg, they beamed from ear to ear. They thanked and praised the goose for her good work and danced around her in joy.

They fed her only the best food, gave her a soft pillow to sit on and made sure she was never in a draft or in the rain.

“Husband, since we know that this goose will always look after us, why don’t we give some of the golden eggs away to others who need them more than us?” the woman asked one day.

The man agreed that this was a fine idea and they did just that.

They loved helping people in this way and neither worried nor stressed that they would run out of eggs nor that the goose would stop laying more.

“Wife wouldn’t it be nice if we had even more eggs to give away ?” remarked the man one day. “If the goose was only able to lay just one more golden egg a day that would mean we could help twice as many people as we can now.”

“Yes but how?” asked his wife.

“As possible as it has been for this goose to come to us and do what she does, so is it not possible for this to be too?”

“Of course,” said his wife, “but it is not for us to know how because we don’t.”

They daydreamed and chatted about who they would help if they had more eggs. As they did so they could sense the appreciation from those they were helping and this made them feel wonderful.

Eventually they fell asleep feeling joyful and light.

The man and woman did not speak of this again, they merely went about looking after and loving their goose and helping others as they had done before.

One morning the man called his wife excitedly, “Come quick…” he said.

When she got there the goose had laid two golden eggs.

They had no idea how this was possible but they were overjoyed and gave the goose even more praise and love than usual.

The goose continued to lay two golden eggs every day and the man and woman were able to help twice as many as they had before and still they always had enough for themselves.

They never for one minute stopped believing that the goose would stop laying eggs.

One night as the man and woman were on their way home after being out to buy the goose a bigger and better pillow and as many ‘goose treats’ as they could carry, they passed the orphanage.

The man commented about how he would like to give some golden eggs to the orphanage and that they probably needed quite a few. His wife agreed.

Before going to bed, as usual they spent some time with the goose telling her how clever she was and giving her all her new gifts.

The next morning the woman called out to her husband with such a sense of urgency that the man leaped up and rushed down the stairs at full speed.

There next to the first goose, was a second goose and each had laid two golden eggs.

What law of attraction principles did you observe in my re-worked fable?

How do you apply these principles in your life and business?

If you’re not yet able to manifest what you want at will, which area/s do you still need to work on?

Please leave me your thoughts in the comments section and I’ll meet you there. If you think your followers might appreciate this story I would love it if you shared it with them. Thank you.

Be Happy!

  1. Hi Marcus,

what a wonderful on this ancient fable. Glad I was able to inspire you. Awesome job.

Wanting more of what we have and love is not greedy. But it doesn’t work without appreciation of what we already have and gratitude. Sharing with others is an important part of that.

What is greedy ? Greedy is wanting more and not knowing how to achieve it and then taking shortcuts or breaking government laws.

How many people make the mistake and think that wanting more alone is already greedy ?

Thanks for the mention and referring to my post !

    Take care

  2. Hi Oliver,

Was that ever clever? Well done!

1 – I saw the couple expressing immense gratitude and releasing by detaching themselves from any outcome and not worrying.

2 – I celebrate evidence of the law of attraction at play. Of course, it always is, but when I attract a particular situation I rejoice for the magnetism….this applies to any type of situation, some of which most would call “bad” or “terrible.”

3 – I continue to work on releasing from a particular outcome and fully adopting an abundant mindset. Still some clearing to do but I improve each day.

Thanks for sharing a wonderfully delightful tale my friend.

    Hi Ryan,

Awesome to read your keen insights into the law of attraction here.

One of the most challenging aspects of the law of attraction when I first started working with it seriously was how unnatural it felt at first.

It really goes against our inner conditioning but when one takes time out to really change one’s focus and we do it continually it is astounding how more natural and easy it feels.

Thanks for sharing your experiences here Ryan. Much appreciated.

  3. Hey Marcus,
I enjoyed reading this post. Oh, wouldn’t it be nice to have a goose that laid golden eggs.

Desire to help others plus appreciation/gratitude mixed with the belief of abundance allowed this goose to create more eggs and a second goose as well.

Yes I think any gold egg laying geese would be rather in demand! :)

Your points about what assisted this goose to be unlimited are spot on and I am sure that had this continued they would have required a lot more space for geese!

  5. Marcus, aloha. Of course you know that I absolutely loved this. What a brilliant post you created from this fable.

The couple knew what they wanted, why they wanted it and then released it to let the universe provide. They did not “worry” over the outcome or try to dictate how the extra eggs had to appear.

They believed it was possible for their desires to be fulfilled even though (1) they did not know the how of it and (2) their desired outcome defied logic.

Their constant appreciation and gratitude raised their vibratory states so that all good things in that level of vibration could come to them.

They wanted more, so they could give more. They had abundance mentality for themselves and others.

Marcus, I happen to be very good at stating what I want and letting go because oftentimes, as you no doubt know, the universe provides something even better than requested. Quite honestly, I find it an endless source of fascination to see what exactly comes in response to my requests.

Let’s say for instance that I want more money. Marcus, I know for sure it will come to me from wherever it is now. It may not come from my primary business rather it may come from something else entirely that seems way out in left field. My focus is on only what I want; not on how I am going to get it.

Here is a perfect vibratory example that happened to me earlier today. I commented to someone how nice it is that these other mutual friends have no urgency to cash checks because they have so much money. What I did was acknowledge how wonderful it is for them and how I too love that feeling. It was a brief moment of appreciation and gratitude before I went on with my day.

Within a half hour, I received a call from a business partner on some rather extraordinary and unexpected positive things that will be happening in my business. The details don’t matter, however, Marcus, let me assure you the news and feelings are much appreciated.

One final comment on the couple, Marcus. It is my belief that if you can make more money than you need to maintain the lifestyle you want–be it extravagant or simple–you have a moral obligation to do so in order to be able to share with others.

Well, Marcus, though I could continue in this vein for a few more pages, I think that I had best get on with the day.

Congratulations on this fantastic post, my friend. Wishing you all the best. Until next time, aloha. Janet

Janet, aloha. Indeed epic it is and I loved reading your comment! Thank you.

Janet you describe the law of attraction process here so eloquently and so accurately. What a spot on awesome job you did. :)

I think the biggest challenge for people when it comes to the law of attraction is that of believing before seeing. We are so conditioned to believe it when we see it but the LOA does not work like this.

When we believe that what we want will come and that we don’t have to figure out ‘the how’, then it’s easy to let go and enjoy the adventure that the Universe will unfold for us.

As you say Janet, often we get something unexpected and better than that which we wanted.

Your line, “My focus is on only what I want; not on how I am going to get it.” is the key. Just think Janet if more people could use this creation method more effectively then they would not have to stress about their business making money.

They could just hand it over to the universe and all would be taken care of. They would then be free of the stress of “needing” their business to make money and they could then relax which would help their business develop too.

I loved reading about your vibratory experience today Janet. How exciting!! I could literally feel my heart beat faster when I read your story. That is a perfect example of how it works.

I am often astounded at what comes my way when I just fleetingly request something and then forget about it.

I also agree that sharing what one makes with others just brings more because it sends a message to the universe that you are not attached to it and you know that there is always more when you ask for it. What liberation this is!

Janet I always love reading and responding to your comments because I always feel so exhilarated during and after the experience. I can feel your energy flowing through your comments all the way to me here in Australia! Thank you for giving of yourself so freely and abundantly. It’s no wonder the universe knows your address! :)

Have a fabulous day Janet. Until next time…

I’m not a fan of The Secret. BUT I immensely enjoyed your story. And there’s a wonderful insight in your story.

You have everything today you need to be thankful for today’s gifts. And so do I. And everyone reading this!

More importantly, you have enough to give to others today so that they can be thankful for today’s gifts too.

It’s just that most of the time, most of us are stuck on what we want to get tomorrow. We’re so stuck on tomorrow’s gift, we don’t be thankful for today. Or tomorrow. Nor will we give what we have to give to others because we think it will subtract from our tomorrow.

  13. Hi Marcus,

Your re-written story made it so easy to understand how the Law of Attraction works. Also the discussion you and Janet had broke down the process perfectly.

Whenever I hear someone say, “I don’t believe in LOA.” I say, “The Law of Attraction is not a belief it’s just is. The LOA is always working.” The things you do want and the things you don’t want to happen in your life is always manifesting because of you. The Universe only knows vibrations. Whatever we give off is what we are going to get back in return.

I really enjoyed your story Marcus.

What you say is so true Tish. Whether you believe in the LOA or not does not mean anything except that if you don’t believe in it you won’t be able to access it deliberately.

It’s like not believing in the law of gravity. That’s fine, don’t believe but when you jump off a 10 storey building you will still fall to the ground.
