How do you get the Attention of a Goldfish?

Why would you want to I hear you ask?  Simple, because your social media audience are all goldfish!

 

The BBC recently announced that:


“The addictive nature of web browsing can leave you with an attention span of nine seconds – the same as a gold fish.”

Apparently the Internet sends us messages at such an expeditious rate, that our once 20 minute attention span has been whittled down to a measly 9 seconds.
  
This is just long enough to read one tweet.

Since the aim of business social media is to connect with people so they get our messages and we only have such a short window of opportunity, how do we do it?

According to author, speaker and internationally recognized marketing expert, Sally Hogshead, you’ve got to learn to sell to goldfish, in other words find out to be be fascinating in 9 seconds!

I want to start off the discussion here by sharing a couple of my own ideas and then I want to open the floor to you to see if together can come up with some further creative wisdom to help everybody reading this post. I’ll share some of the best responses in a follow up post.

  

Be Big!

 

BIG gets people’s attention! You don’t have to actually be big or have a big budget but you do have to create the perception you’re BIG. One way to do this is by being instantly recognizable. Here are four ways to appear BIG!


  • Be visible.
  • Be everywhere.
  • Look different to everybody else.
  • Use catchy and consistent branding.

 

 

Make People FEEL  Something

 
 
People are fascinated when their emotions have been moved. Here are four ways to engage people’s emotions.
  • Ask questions that require people to feel
  • Make predictions
  • Be controversial
  • Be bold

  2. Marcus, aloha. CONGRATULATIONS on this absolutely brilliant headline. I love it! Your goldfish image is terrific as well. WOW! What a magnificent start to my day this is.

    Marcus, this a semantics issue that comes up for me every time I read about Sally Hogshead and the word fascinating.

    The reason why I say that is “fascinating” could well be something that I peer at through a microscope. Though I have no interest in it whatsoever, I am “fascinated” watching the squiggles morph. Many people are the same with traffic accidents, plane crashes, natural disaster scenes and anything else that is “horrible” in nature.

    Thus, I have no interest in “fascinating” people as Sally says, I would much rather “enchant” as in Guy Kawasaki’s “Enchantment.”

    In his book, Guy says: “. . .that in business and personal interactions, your goals in not merely to get what you want but to bring about a voluntary, enduring and delightful change in other people.”

    Now, Marcus, that enchants me and speaks to my aspirations.

    As you know, many of my posts do make people Feel so I will expand on that topic which enchants me.

    Marcus, how I capture people’s attention for longer than 9 seconds is by writing posts that draw them out, cause them to reflect, cause them to expand their thinking, to dream bigger, to know it’s safe to dream again.

    My purpose, Marcus, is to provide a venue where my readers can express themselves freely–the good, the bad & the ugly–hope, fears, dreams–as they think through their reactions/response to what I wrote.

    Marcus, my goal is not to be considered “fascinating” rather I want my readers to appreciate what marvelous beings they are. Through interactions with me and others in the comments sections, I do see people some people realizing that they truly can be or do or have anything they want. That enchants and thrills me.

    What I also see, Marcus, is people being reminded of things they knew yet “forgot” or were distracted away from for whatever reason. Parents are reminded of something that is important to them yet they had not yet told their children or they were just telling their children about it.

    Marcus, I want to engage and to enchant my readers: I want it to be mutually beneficial. Though my blog is about me in the sense that it is my thoughts I write, it is for my readers. If something I write or a reader’s comment, speaks to someone and causes a positive change/shift for them, that matters to me.

    What I want, Marcus, is to:

    “. . .bring about a voluntary, enduring and delightful change in other people”

    as is best for them.

    So, Marcus, in answer to your question, put me down for:

    It is not necessary for people to agree with what they find on my blog but what I do want them to do as you say is to consider where they stand on things and whatever the outcome of this is, to make a case for it loudly and proudly.

    You have done exactly this Janet and I so appreciated reading your thoughts here on this topic.

    I love the the Guy Kawasaki quote and I love the distinction you draw between ‘fascinate’ and ‘enchant’.

    I agree with you in that I too want my blog to be a catalyst for change in others so they can realize how truly magnificent they are and that they are capable of so much more than they ever thought possible.

    What I want more than anything is for my readers to connect within and then to express this as they connect with others.

    Over the last few days I have been thinking about the word ‘fascinate’ myself and the challenge for me is that it is too “passive”.

    Fascinating someone does not necessarily lead them to change or take any action whereas “enchanting” them does.

  3. Hey Marcus,
    The attention span of a goldfish says it all. When I write a post I must consider this fact. I need to play around a little here to see what works best though in regards to the length of the post.

    I have a few controversial topics that I want to write about because I believe that these would be more compelling and engaging to readers.

    I completely agree with getting people to feel something while reading one of our posts or tweets. It’s the feeling that grabs us and connects us with the information, idea, or resource.

    Great post. I have to say I absolutely love your headlines, they pull me in, the make me laugh they’re perfect. That being said 9 seconds, seriously!! I like to think I at least have an attention span of 15 seconds. LOL! Seriously though, you’re right about being BIG and being everywhere. My husband just designed our new company logo, so excited. I am hoping it will be everywhere and big enough to catch people’s eyes. Thank you for sharing :)

  7. Hi Marcus,

    we should never forget that these 9 seconds – whether this number is true or false – are an average number. And I hate averages.

    My take is: I don’t want goldfish as customers and business partners, that’s why I don’t target them. I want people as customers and business partners who have a longer attention span. The question is also: Are goldfish able to commit to a cause and to focus ? Or do their committments and focuses change as well every 9 seconds ? Then it’s not a commitment or a focus.

  8. I’m digging your tips Marcus.

    Making an impression by moving people into action wherever you show up is a wonderful way to grab people’s attention.

    I like to engage wherever I’m at, asking questions, providing answers, and leaving my insight whenever I can.

    Being bold is also top shelf advice. People who resonate with your viewpoint become magnetized to you. I see an instant spike in Facebook friend requests and Twitter followers when I act boldly. When I take my foot off the pedal a little, not as favorable a response.

    The challenge is to follow your steps consistently, but eventually a kind of attention-grabbing momentum is built, and you can snag someone’s concentration quite easily.

  9. Hey Marcus!

    Awesome article you put together here.

    I think this is why twitter is so successful, because it allows 140 characters. It forces people to keep it short. (some people go over the limit, but who really reads on beyond that point? I dont)

    Facebook too, is taking on a faster update approach and keeping the status updates current similar to twitter.

    As far a blogging and running our businesses, this is where our marketing takes over. What is our differentiation factor?

    Many of us are already doing a great job with this. I think once the gold fish is captured and their attention is caught for those 9 seconds in a blog or with a consultation, if its interesting they’ll want more.

    Many of us have returning gold fish. I think once the relationship is built with a gold fish then the 9 seconds doesn’t become a problem anymore.

    Capturing their attention during that 9 second time span is where most of the work is done, at least that’s how I see it.

    You’ve captured me, I keep coming back lol So I’d say you do a great job of captalizing on the 9 seconds of us gold fish lol.

    I like you thinking about once the relationship is built then the 9 seconds doesn’t become a problem anymore.

    We don’t actually need them to read anything of ours while we develop the relationship but once we have succeeded then they will read what we write anyway. Seems like a great approach to use.

I really appreciate your tips on getting the attention of our audience … all one has to do is study the bounce rate these days and it becomes all too clear how little time most people spend on a site.   11. I agree with everyone else Marcus, great title. I was also shocked at the 9 second attention span. Ouch! That hurt!

    I also agree with Oliver, I certainly don’t want people in my business that have that little of an attention span. I want people who engage, share, ask questions and are out there as well.

    I know that from my statistics that people stay on my site for several minutes so I would hope that means they find my content engaging. I probably have some difficulty in some of the areas you suggested, just because it would be outside my comfort zone but I’m still a work in progress. I guess only time will tell my friend.

    Perhaps that’s where the key lies in all seriousness though. If we are attracting gold fish then what we really need to be doing is changing our point of attraction, not catering to the masses.

    I usually check out other comments to see how I can add to the discussion, but in the case I haven’t because I don’t want to be swayed by what others have suggested.

    So if this is a repeat suggestion, please forgive me.

    Here is my thoughts on how to rise above the noise and grab the attention of others.

    First, don’t try to grab the attention of everyone. To be successful and stand out, you must decide what small fraction of the internet community you want to sway, and then write or talk specifically for them.

    Second, do your homework. Don’t assume you know anything about your target market. Ask questions and listen carefully. Once you have an idea of what they need and want, and what their trigger points are, then you can write headlines directly to those needs.

    Sounds simple, but it takes preparation and work. That’s why most never rise above the noise.

    I enjoy studying commercials for this very reason.
    I am in the process of putting together an indepth look at what goes in to a branding video based on a couple of very popular brands on cable tv right now.

    They are extremely short, and to the point.
    Very well done, for those of us who have an attention span of a measly 9 seconds.

    That is disgusting to tell you the truth. That is the downside of all this media. It has whittled our attention span down to nothing.

    I was raised reading books instead of watching tv, and I am very thankful for that. I believe it is key to helping our children develop properly.

    Apart from the Internet, television, computer games and even all the very fast action packed films of today are all contributing to the erosion of our ability to focus as we can.

    Maybe it’s a case of human beings not having caught up with being able to process data as fast as required these days. Perhaps the technology is ahead of human development?

    You bring up an important element of “feeling” here. The more you can elicit a deeper emotion, the better your chances of triggering a response to stick around for more good feelings!

    What fascinates me is what makes people click. Also, what makes people feel what they are reading.

    One way to start being more fascinating, these days, is to keep showing up. There are enough fly-by-night, viral campaigns but those who endure and are reliably “there” will WIN people’s attention.

  15. Hi Marcus,

    I didn’t know that a goldfish had the attention span of 9 seconds :) I also didn’t know that readers used to have an attention span of 20 minutes!

    I admit that my attention span has dropped considerably because it feels there is just so much to do and read :)

    For my blog, I am more a feel person and just allow myself to be me when I write my posts. I am not sure how to make myself stand out but it’s more important for me to be authentic. I think that doing so, it will help me stand out.

    I know some people won’t resonate with me but others will and I am fine with that :) Those who do resonate with me, I hope to get more than 9 seconds from them as the relationship develops.

  17. I didn’t know that much about goldfishes as well.. Hmm.. The things you get to learn from fishes.. hehe.. not to mention the great post titles too.. nice post!! very helpful for spurring up our minds.. :D

    I could think of a few big ideas right now..

    I would try to catch me by a game.. or cool graphics in my site.. then I’ll get them by the great content of my site.. the games and graphics will just be a way to get them to read the content..

    That seems to work for me if I were the goldfish.. :D

    Having catchy graphics is a very important way to get attention. Sometimes I see a picture that leads to a post and I click on it because the picture makes me curious so that’s an awesome tip too.

    Wow, 9 seconds! That’s a tough one.

    Twitter is limited to 140 characters per tweet so tweeting by itself is already a challenge. Getting, and holding the attention span, of a person has never been this crazed!

    Hmm, I would actually go for “be controversial.” That’s really a great idea to begin with. There’s nothing about stirring a controversy that titillates people to know more about it. We are really nosy people, aren’t we? hahaha

    I guess, just to add, I would say, “be engaging.” In short, “be witty.” I think the rules of face-to-face communication can also be applied in the social blogosphere. If you’re the type of person who actually responds or comments or reacts to something and engages someone with intelligent conversation, you could actually hold that person’s attention for more than 9 seconds. :)

    These days there’s less time than ever to get your message across, and more noise surrounding it as well.

    I’d recently heard that it was a good idea to be able to state your offer in under 30 seconds but now I see it has to be whittled down to 9.

    The art of Impact is becoming more sacred daily it seems!

    What grabs my attention? That’s a great question and one I can’t answer off the cuff for some reason. Something to become a bit more conscious about, I think!

    Once we get someone’s attention we have 9 seconds to get them to stay with us – seems like a bit of an impossibility to achieve a high success rate.

    I am starting to think that what one has to do is attract attention to ourselves first and then by default people will give our messages enough time because they like us.

I have a list of blogs which I often visit, I just love the way these bloggers write and most of the time the information these bloggers share are eye opening topics. I see the same faces sharing either as a guest poster or a commenter and this technique I should say is a brilliant way of getting noticed.

  23. Marcus, you know, this post summed it up. That’s what we have to do. Though none of us want Goldfish, we have to capture them or ‘hook’ them in order to have them bite at what we are trying to say.

    I, like Janet often ‘try’ to touch a nerve to make them ‘stop’ and stick around for a while.

    I’m looking for that magic switch… the one that we ALL have that makes people have that ‘oh yeah…” moment. or even that fireworks moment to rev motivation and see their own greatness.

    Gawd Marcus, you’d think by having the worlds biggest pond, there’d be schools of Goldfish who had drive and determination. Instead, I often feel there are schools of daydreamy ones who like to swim around their bowls blowing bubbles till its time to go to bed so they can get back on the treadmill again tomorrow.

    Definitely a great analogy to make me fish a little harder!

    You know I think a lot more has to do with understanding people rather than marketing and that’s what your comment says to me.

    When we know how to touch people’s emotions, we “hook them” more than in any other way.

    I suppose just as there many different types of fish in the sea so there are people out there on the Internet.

    Hmmm maybe I should do a fish course next!! Ha ha

  25. Wow Marcus how true it is that the people out there on social media are all goldfish! Although I just came to know about the 9 second attention span of goldfish. To me being everywhere works, and yes of course, we need to connect with people’s emotions – not too complicated; just by helping them out, this can be easily accomplished!
