To be or not to be…That’s the Facebook Question

Last week I discovered the Facebook Questions tool. I decided to give it a test run using a simple poll. A few people expressed an interest in reading about the results, so here they are.

Facebook Questions tool

From above it’s plain to see that on average most people voted for the 1-2 hrs option.

The overall theme of the accompanying comments that emerged will not come as any surprise – ‘the time it takes to write and publish a post depends on the type of post being created.’

If you want to read these comments you can go to the official results page on Facebook.

How Well did the Tool Work?  My Thoughts…

It’s easy to set up and I like the fact that respondents can add further options if you want them to do so. One person did this.

Being able to tag your friends to answer the question is a significant benefit. The majority of respondents came from those who had been tagged.

Many people whom I thought would respond didn’t. Why? Who knows…. As Jim Rohn would have advised, the best response to this is, “Isn’t that interesting”.

What I do know is that some people just don’t like polls, others may not have found the question relevant or riveting enough while more would simply have missed it in amongst all the other Internet noise.

How to use Facebook Questions Effectively – Some Suggestions…

  • Make your question specific and one that arouses definite interest in your niche or choose a general question that will appeal to more people if you just want to have a bit of fun.

  • Publish the question at the best time of the day for wherever the majority of your target market is located.

  • Promote the question more than once so that you can remind people about it and catch those who missed it.
  • Set a time limit so that people are encouraged to answer then and there rather than putting it aside till later.
  • Offer an incentive to increase participation if the question is important enough.

  • Tag enough people in order to get a worthwhile sample back.

At one time, polls were quite popular features on blogs. The idea was to encourage participation amongst one’s readers. I can’t say I found them to be hugely successful.

One must always remember that the number of people who actively respond to anything in any way will always be the minority.

Just compare the number of people who visit your blog daily with how many of these leave comments for instance, or the number of people who buy training programs compared with the number who complete and implement the information. It seems to be a general human characteristic. Isn’t that interesting…..

As for the Facebook Question tool – I think its success will depend on how well known you are to your target audience, the question being asked and whether the person responding stands to gain something from doing so, whether this is simply the satisfaction of having taken part or something more material.

A big thank you to those who did respond to the question. I appreciate you all. The comments section is awaiting your responses. :)

Be Happy!

  1. Great thoughts on polls/questions. I think it can be a value-add, like just about anything else on the platforms of choice. Going to play around with that with your encouragement.

  2. Hi Marcus,

I should have read your advice on how to use this feature effectively before I posted my own question yesterday. But then again, you hadn’t written that blog post yet :)

Anyway, it’s never to late to learn how to do it right, and…there’s always next time.

So, thank you very much for your insights! They are truly appreciated!

It’s all a learning journey and we learn as we go don’t we? We never get it done. As you say it is never too late to learn because we only learn to get better and better.

Always appreciate having your input here Ilka!

  3. Marcus, aloha. Thx for the feedback on this tool. Because of your insights, I will be able to use it more effectively; your suggestions make so much sense.

In particular, I like your suggestions to post it more than once and to set a time limit.

In my opinion, your poll was very easy to answer so not sure why people would set it aside unless it was to comment and later never happened.

Can it be set, Marcus, so that people can ONLY check one of the options rather than leave a comment? If people did not feel they had to comment, perhaps more would have clicked the boxes.

In any event, thx so much for sharing this. Watch for my poll in the not too distant future. Great post, Marcus. Off to share it with the world. Aloha. Janet

    Hi Janet,

Interestingly a lot more people have responded now since this post so sometimes it may just have to do with awareness which is why it is important to factor the promotional aspect in too.

Also I think people are so bombarded with offers and information and questions that sometimes they just decide to ignore things.

I can understand this although I never do this intententionally if the person asking me something is well known to me. :)

I don’t think people have to leave a comment Janet, or at least I didn’t when I responded. Maybe the fact that they are given the choice to do so might stop some people from continuing. Not sure abou that.

Thank you for your feedback too Janet. It is much appreciated. :)

I look forward to your poll too. Hopoefully I won’t miss it now that I have suggested how you can make sure you get people’s attention. :)

    Hi Marcus!

I think this is a great idea. I enjoyed your question, and I’d love to know the secret of those who can get a post produced and published in under an hour!

Seems like a handy tool. The answers you may find (if you ask the right questions!) can be extremely valuable in terms of identifying people’s needs and wants.

Love that you took this post a step further and put together some of your thoughts about how to make the most of this.

Seems like you got a fairly good response already though! This question brought many members of our blogging community together at once, which I rather like.

    Thanks Marcus, ingenious as ever!

    Hi Jym,

I’d love to know too. :)

Ryan Biddulph manages to do it and he says it’s because his posts are short, often under 400 words.

I do often start out with that being my intenton but obviously I have far too much to say. LOL

Maybe I am making up for the fact that I hardly say a word when I am prospecting other than asking questions. Ha ha…

Yes the response has got better over time so maybe there’s a message in this too…. Give people enough time to respond!

Always appreciate your feedback Jym. Thank you.

  6. Hi Marcus,

Damn it I need to spend more time on Facebook. Didn’t even know about this tool but will certainly look into it. Its a great way to gauge interests, needs and wants from people. In fact I’m going to mention this to a friend who has just setup a business directory. He needs opinions about what people want from it so this could be a great way of opening up that discussion.

  7. Hi Marcus,

Nice test run. As far as I know, every social media can be used to the max if used at the right time. So as you say, posting at the peak hours counts a lot and encourages people to participate.

I am not sure about the tagging functionality – have to explore about that. Setting a time limit to participate is a wonderful tip.

    Cheers,
    Jane.

  8. Hi Marcus,

I really appreciate you taking the lead on this. As I mentioned earlier, this seems like an awesome tool for market research.

Like you, I’ve had polls on some of my previous blogs, but they weren’t well received. In fact, most were ignored. This seems different, though. I can’t wait to give it a shot.

Thanks for the information! Talk soon.

    Marcus,

I liked your tips to submit a specific question, publish at the right time of day, and tag enough people to get a worth sample. Those stood out for me.

Hopefully those who use this feature will use it sparingly as (with any tactic) you can burn people out. BUT, I do think these are fun – I just didn’t log in to see the poll myself!

Thank you for testing for us, Marcus.
