Is Being Lead Generation Obsessive Serving Your Network Marketing Internet Business?

  • class="st_sharethis" displayText="Share">

We hear it over and over again – without leads you have no business. I agree but is it possible that you could be so obsessed with generating leads for your network marketing Internet business that you could be missing diamonds in the masses?

I was once  employed by a company with a higher than usual staff turnover. This happens when the mighty dollar is valued more than the people who make it possible.

At a meeting one day, the HR Manager announced that the company was spending far too much money on recruiting and training new employees.  She wanted us as managers to brainstorm how we could reduce this spend.

The ingenuity that poured forth was remarkable, albeit misdirected. I heard everything from offering current staff a meagre cash gift for introducing new job seekers, to moving away from recruitment agencies in favor of cheaper online options.  These were all good ideas but missing the actual point as far as I was concerned.

“Why don’t we just stop recruiting and training new employees ?”  I asked. Everybody laughed.

“If we figured out how to better keep our employees then there would be no need for us to be having this discussion.” The laughter became a stony silence. Had I hit a nerve? You bet.

Unfortunately although the company was most enthusiastic about my money saving suggestion, they were still not prepared to do what was required to make the saving – look after their people. I left the company not long afterward.

Any successful shop owner will tell you that making an effort to keep existing customers is just as, if not more important than finding new ones.

The network marketing industry is about people everybody says. So do YOU really look after the people who are already in YOUR network before finding more?

Who are your people? They’re not just your sponsored team members but  I believe everybody with whom we come into contact. This means your team, your leads, the people who comment on your blog, your Facebook friends etc

We tend to be obsessed as Internet marketers with ‘en masse’  - the  more the better – more site traffic, more leads , more Facebook friends…  more, more and more…

There’s no disputing the immense power of the Internet to mobilize in number and while this is useful of course and has the potential to be lucrative when it comes to affiliate commissions, how do you make this serve your network marketing goals?

Fantastic if you can get 300 leads a day but can you really explore the suitability of all these people as close business partners?

When I was a school teacher my first priority was not to teach children but to develop the desire and passion within them to love learning so that they could become independent learners for life.

Can this philosophy be applied to network marketing? I believe there are other network marketers who understand the power of this thinking.

Some of the most successful network marketers I know have not personally sponsored more than a dozen or so people. Their success has come from developing and mentoring  each and every one of these;  not to become marketing clones of themselves but to genuinely help them find the way to success within themselves and then teach them to do the same with their team.

This is the power of network marketing. The magic of duplication does not lie in whether they can market in the exact same way as you but whether you can ignite and guide the free enterprise spirit within them and teach them to do the same in others.

Am I saying we should give up generating more leads? No. However have you really explored the true potential that exists within the group of people with whom you have already established some level of contact? For example have you seriously tried to have a conversation with each and every one of your Facebook friends? I certainly can’t say I have.

As for your team, how much time do you spend mentoring them to step outside their comfort zone or if they don’t do you simply let them go? Didn’t you choose them because you believed they could be successful?

So generate more leads but don’t become so obsessed with ongoing lead generation that you miss the gems that are already right under your nose.

I’d love to hear your thoughts about this so please leave me a comment and if you enjoyed this post please share it on your social networks. Thank you.

My goal? Helping you achieve yours.

  1. Hey Marcus nice post. It really hit home. It inspired me to go back and check on the team members to see if there was something I was not doing. Sometimes in looking too far forward we might overlook or bypass a diamond in the ruff. Thanks for the content and keep up the good work.

    Hi there Thomas,

Nice to have you visit again. Yes why create more work when there is no need? Nurture what we already have is being grateful for what we have and from that will come forth greater abundance anyway.

  2. Hello Marcus,

Enjoyed this post very much and your message is right on!!

What good is it to have thousands of people on facebook or twitter if you really don’t know any of them?

Keep up the great work and sharing your wisdom and I’m passing on what you say to other’s so they too can learn from it…

    Wishing you all my best….

    Hi Larry,

Great to have you visit and thanks for the comment. Yes we probably have enough people to contact for a long time without the need to generate any more if only we will see them. :)

  3. I totally agree.

I have heard it said a lot lately that Traffic + Conversion is what you really want. But based on what you are saying I think there is a better equation:

(Traffic + Conversion) x Retention x Duplication = True Success

You need all of that or you are just going to continue to have to spin your wheels.

Great if you can drive traffic, create leads, and get sales. But if you have to do it over and over and over again, what I don’t think you are really accomplishing your goals.

    Great post!

  4. Marcus,

That reminds me of a story I heard this past weekend in Vegas… I heard of an affiliate launch, and a 2 guys… 1 had a list of 50K+ and the other had a list of 3K or so… The guy with the smaller list made 15 times the sales of the other guy.

He had a better relationship with the people on his list because he followed the principles you’re talking about here my friend.

You’ve definitely hit a nerve with me

    Hi Jordan,

Yes your story from Vegas says it all. We hear that this is about relationships but too often not enough time is being spent on nurturing these.

  5. Hi Marcus,

This post resonates with me because I have made a concerted effort to double up on giving my current team members more attention and guidance. It’s so easy to get caught up in the More More More mindset and forget the wonderful resources and relationships which we can nurture right now.

I just sent out a “Raising The Bar” training initiative the other week and on the FB front I went online for chatting for the first time in months. Each contact counts! As you wisely stated everyone who you come into contact with is one of your peeps. The universe doesn’t deal in judgement; only people do.

Thanks for sharing your keen insight on an important topic.

  6. Well this definitely spoke to me. We can’t be so driven to get our message out there to find leads and contacts that it becomes so vicious a cycle that we forget the ones that have already believed our message. Its just as important to nurture relationships as it is to establish them. We just need to find the balance.

  7. Great message Marcus!

I have been thinking of this very thing the past couple of days. I’ve been going over the training I provide, looking for cracks and gaps that people might fall through.

I know everyone won’t succeed, but I want everyone who’s ready, to have all they need to do so.

You make some great points, it’s not just those in our primary company, it’s all that we’re training and communicating with.

    Very awesome message my friend.

  8. Great post Marcus and I can relate to your story about retaining employees rather than constantly recruiting and training.

I think some people in mlm would be shocked at how some top mlm producers did not recruit hundreds and hundreds of people into their primary business . I am talking about the ones who are earning 7 figures a year.

Instead they went through a recruitment phase of say 5 new recruits and then they worked with recruits to duplicate.

    Something to think about :)

    Hi Peter,

I agree. As I see it, the ultimate point of network marketing is for members to create small effective businesses that all interact and feed each other. In so doing the potential to create massive businesses by leveraging the input of others is created. This can only be done if we perpetuate the system.

If we don’t, we have to continually generate more leads so we can recruit more members to replace the 99% of our team we lose to attrition. This just sounds like being a ‘salesman for life’ scenario to me, exactly the opposite why I got involved in this industry.

  9. Wow, Marcus, you definitely hit a very valid point. I have always believed that it is much cheaper to keep my existing customers than to go out and acquire new ones. Since then, I have learned that if you keep your customers happy, you will get referrals, which helps your customer base grow.

Happy customers often turn into distributors. An added bonus :)

    Have an awesome week!

  10. Hey Marcus,

Totally agree with you. I think what happens is people start chanting mantras but don’t really get the true meaning of it. For team members in any organization to Know, Like and trust you. The bottom line is the relationship you have with them. They will only take you seriously if you have exercise qualities or you will lose them to people who do
