What does a network marketing Internet business have to do with target sports?

Quite a lot actually. If you get  what I’m about to tell you here, then you’ll understand that you can achieve a whole lot more by targeting less.

I’ve not had a lot of target sport type experience. A little Archery here and there and being a member of my local pub’s social darts team when I lived in the UK sums it up.

What  I can say is that few people are simply gifted with hitting the highest scores. Everybody experiences their own fair share of  frustration  along the way  in order to get better, which in my case regularly included not even making the board, never mind hitting the target.

What is amazing is how quickly one improves with practice  as long as you focus on the target and improve your skill and strategy.

What is one of the Most Significant Advantages of Having a Network Marketing Internet Business?

Quite simply that you can capitalize on the unrivalled power of the Internet to target your audience. Many fail to understand this with dire consequences.

Just as it takes time and practice to get good at target sports, refining the way in which you target your online business is no different. I’m going to tell you exactly how to do this but let’s take a purely mathematical angle to explain why you MUST do this.

Would you rather have 0.005% of 1000 000 which is 50, or 1% of 30 000 which is 300?

I think the answer is rather obvious. The more targeted you can make your online business, the less competition there will be, so the greater your chance of reaching a higher number of people.

We are not automatically programmed to believe this at a sub conscious level. We think if we try  and expose ourselves to a bigger group that we stand to gain more. WRONG!

How to use Markets, Niches and Micro Niches to Target Your  Network Marketing Internet Business

Understanding these terms fully is the key to your targeting success.  A market is generally a group of people who share a common interest in a specific  topic or activity. For our purposes let’s call our market, network marketers. Our primary area of interest is network marketing.

A niche is part of a market that relates to a specific topic. So let’s say the niche we are in is network marketers  who use Internet attraction marketing

A micro niche is a further breakdown of the niche. The question to ask is what smaller groups exist within the niche? Here are some examples of micro niches within the group.

Network Marketers who use Internet attraction marketing and who

  • use article marketing as a primary strategy
  • use social marketing strategies to generate free leads
  • are aligned with a company called Amway / any other company
  • are stay at home Dads/Moms
  • are travelling around the world
  • are ex corporate executives / teachers/ nurses

There are as many micro niches as one can define.  When you know what your micro niche  is then you can target those who want to be a part of this group because you will be able to show them the way. Now it becomes a whole lot easier to choose keywords that are specific to reaching that group when it comes to your blog and marketing. You can also develop your personal brand so that it appeals to your target group.

One word of warning.  Just because you decide on a micro niche does not mean that it is necessarily financially viable. You need to do market research and undertake some testing.  The best way to do this is by way of  keyword research and the best training  and tools you can use is all free when you download a trial version of the the keyword generator tool, Market Samurai.

So do you think you have targeted your network marketing Internet business well enough or could you find an even smaller sub group to target? Please leave your comments and share this post with your social networks if you found it useful. Thank you.

My goal? Helping you achieve yours.

  1. Hi Marcus,

Thanks for sharing the detailed break-down of how one goes about targeting their prospects.

You are SO right in how we are not programmed to think the proper way when searching for prospects. The ego says “I gotta handle this by reaching as many people as possible” without realizing how much inefficient action is taking place.

When I began to focus on a tight niche with the appropriate keywords it became easier to generate leads. This is the power of critical thought, or deeper thinking for that matter.

  2. Hi Marcus,
focus is key. You can achieve better results with less work. Of course, it’s crucial to test if it’s financially viable, as you say. The more you focus, the more folks realize that you’re knowing what you’re doing.

    Hi Oliver,

That’s right and also it’s easier to become an awesome expert in one area than try to be an expert in all areas so focus also means making life easier for ourselves.

  3. Howzit Marcus! You’ve scored another bulls-eye! I am pretty new at this social media stuff. I’m more old school. And I can tell you that I am pretty much all over the target and even missing it entirely! However, as you say, with practice I will be able to get closer and closer to the bulls-eye. And get faster doing it too! Thanks for the wonderful post.

  4. Hi Marcus,

I love your analogies, clear and easy to see in your minds eye.

It all comes down to practice, in target sports or anyting else.

It reminds me of a corollary to an old adage, “If at first you don’t succeed, you’re about average.”

    Hi Mike,

I like that corollary! :) Yes the more we practice the better we get. The challenge for some is they don’t turn up to practice!

  5. Hey Marcus,

For a long time I was pretty much using the 3 foot rule where I would talk to anybody and everybody, although it was still uncomfortable for me. But anyways, this was a lot of wasted time.

When I found out about having a target market and focusing on niches, my business changed completely, because now I get more qualified leads. The more you focus on certain markets and niches, the better chance that you’ll get more qualified leads.

    Thanks For Sharing Marcus!!!

    Hi Sherman,

I guess it’s hard to shake the 3 foot rule which is an offline strategy but as you have found it really does not serve one well using the Internet. Focus is KING! :)

  7. Hey Marcus,

This is a huge mistake I see many new bloggers or internet marketer make. Not knowing their niche market therefore, not providing what the audience is looking for. When you do your homework and realize what your audience is looking for. You can smoke your competitors because you are delivering the proper product. Love this post!

  8. I agree with Josh, love this post because it is so important to do research and target a profitable market.

I have one suggestion for anyone who is having trouble finding a niche market, go look in the mirror and tell yourself your story.

Chances are there are a bunch of people out there with the same story.

  9. Marcus fabulous post man. You know what I kept thinking about as I read this post was gold miners that used to sift for gold. They would have to move a lot of dirt and debris to get to that small prize but man if they did it right look out nearest town! The stats you put up really made me think that. It’s the same with finding our niche sifted and researched properly we can find our gold as well in cornering a market we can reach.

  10. Great article Marcus!

I never thought of narrowing prospects down to micro niches but I love it! Any suggestions on how to get more specific keywords?

    Thanks again!

    Marcus Baker Reply:

    Hi Cara,

What I suggest is that you start with broader niche keywords then keep drilling down till you get more specific words.

I have never done this using the Google Keyword tool. I have just used paid tools so the process is quite specific to the tools. I recommend using the free version of Market Samurai where their training videos explain exactly how to do this. Hope that helps.

  11. Hey Marcus,

Narrowing it down as much as possible is really great for speaking directly to your targets deepest needs/wants/desires. Helping you connect with them and actually help them get what they want.

    Great post!

  12. Marcus, good information. I like your analogy to the target sports. About your comment that most marketers are trying to reach as many people as possible. Do you think that’s an outgrowth of the old “3 foot rule” or prospecting “anyone that’s breathing”? Thanks for defining micro-niches.
