Know What Kind of Party Animal you are to Master Facebook for Business

Do you ‘ really get’ what Facebook is all about? Many don’t. I didn’t either for a long time. The problem is if you don’t, you’ll also have no idea how to make Facebook work for your network marketing Internet business.

Get Ready to Party…

Quite simply, at its most basic level Facebook is just like a huge party.

By party I  mean any large gathering where people meet to socialize, so not necessarily a party in the traditional sense.

There are people on Facebook from all countries, backgrounds and cultures, all with their own agenda for being there.

To be successful, reveal who you are as a person, then interact with others so that you can find like minded people with whom to connect.

Some will like you enough and when a connection is established there’s a very good chance they will ask what you do, exactly as this would happen at any social gathering.

In the the same way you would not walk up to someone at a party and start telling them what you do or worse still why they must join you in your ‘time sensitive, just released, ground floor opportunity’, so this kind of behavior should be avoided at all costs on Facebook too.

What Kind of ‘Party Animal’ are you?

In other words, what are your socializing habits?

What is the most natural way for you to interact with people, generally and specifically when you find yourself in large crowds?

Knowing what your natural style is when you communicate with others in this kind of environment could well help you to know how to get the most from Facebook too.

Are you a ‘Mass Influencer’?

This is the type that can mobilize huge groups of people to leave one party and go to another in a matter of minutes.

They are usually well known and liked by many. They are leaders with a lot of presence and they prefer and are able to connect with a lot of people at any one time.

If this describes you, then you will want to find ways of marketing to the masses on Facebook. Marketing that includes Facebook advertising and using SEO within the platform to reach as many people as you can.

Are you an ‘Individual Influencer’?

These types are completely the opposite in nature. They prefer to steadily and consistently move through the crowd networking one-on-one as they go.

They can be ‘influencers’ too but they get more from working at a more personal level with others, establishing deeper  and often longer lasting relationships with them.

They are also leaders and are well liked by the people they interact with but they are probably known by less people than the first type I spoke about.

If this describes you then all you need to do on Facebook is strike up a conversation one at a time with people. It’s as simple as that.

Don’t concern yourself with doing all the things that others might be doing but which feel quite unatural for you to do, like trying to get all your friends to attend your webinar, even if it is free. Be true to who you are.

This is the way I network at parties and because I know how to do it, I can work through a lot of people this way. It just takes practice.

Are you neither of these?

There is third group. These are the shy, ‘wall flower types’ at parties. They  are often alone and not speaking to anybody. It’s not that they don’t want to, they just feel that they can’t for some reason.

If this describes you then I want you to know that you’re going to find network marketing very frustrating because being successful will depend on doing something that does not come naturally to you…… yet.

Our job is to be leaders and speak to as many people as we can. You don’t have to be a loud, mass influencer, but speak to people you must.

It is possible to change. It starts with acknowledging that this is how you behave, deciding to change because it’s important enough to you and then taking it one step at a time, remembering to be kind to yourself as you go.

Understanding yourself , knowing how you behave and calling on your strengths and developing these is the key to being personally successful in business no matter what it is you’re doing.

So what kind of party animal are you? You may even be a bit of both. What works for you on Facebook? Let me know by leaving a comment and please share this post with your social network followings if you believe they will find it valuable. Thank you.

My goal?  Helping you achieve yours.

  1. Hey Marcus,
As usual, I have learned a lot from this post. I have struggled with using Facebook as a marketing tool mainly because I was not sure exactly what Facebook was. I am going to start using Facebook properly now thanks to your post.

    Thanks again!

    Hi there Rusty,

Always good to have you visit. :)

Pleased my post clarified things a bit. Facebook is quite a simple process but somehow it comes across as more complex and then it’s also just human nature to complicate it more than we need to.

  2. Hello Marcus

I am a one on one kind of guy (when I am not dancing on the table with the lamp shade on my head)

Here is the way I figure it “Do not do unto others what you do not want others to do unto you”

Just be friendly because there are some very interesting people on Facebook.

Funny but I can kind of see you doing that table dance! :)

“Do not do unto others what you do not want others to do unto you” is excellent advice, couldn’t agree more.:)

  4. Hi Marcus,

I never even thought about looking at Facebook as a party and how I was presenting myself to it.

I guess I’m more the one on one guy, definitely not the other, though I’m working on expanding to become one. When talking with someone on FB and you think you’re interested in working with them, or they’ve expressed interest in working with you, check out their profile and info page, learn something about them so you can communicate more effectively.

    All the best,

    Alan

    Hi Alan,

Your suggestion about checking out someone’s profile is so important. I get really cranky when people ask me questions that I have already answered on my profile.

Thanks for bringing up that very important point. :)

  5. Hi Marcus,

awesome mindset post. The beauty about this mass convention called Facebook that you are able to attract people who fit your style if you stay true to yourself. Trouble starts when people who are normally rather shy suddenly lose their inhibitions when networking on the internet. Well, regarding my current personal development I’m rather the second type, but I’m working on combining the advantages of the first type and the second type. It’s only the question how much public recognition we are able to stand.

    Thanks for sharing.

    Take care

    Hi Oliver,

Thanks for adding to the discussion here. An ideal situation would be to manage both approaches if one can but like you say it all depends on whether one is ready for the Facebook Paparazzi-style attention or not. :)

  6. Hey Marcus,

Facebook is confusing at first, there’s just so much always going on. There’s no way I can keep up with my ‘feed’. WOW!

I’m much more of a ‘move through the crowd and connect with people one on one as I go’ kind of girl. When all eyes are on me at once it’s all I can do not to blush to the roots of my hair and forget how to talk. ;)

I have to say, the ‘old school’ way of marketing my business in meetings offline, along with my determination to succeed, went a LONG way in helping me get in front of crowds and still deliver a powerful message.

Again I think you hit the nail on the head with this post.

    Great stuff!

    Hi Susanna,

I so agree with you about the Facebook feed…. whew…. talk about totally consuming some days!!

I have a friend who says to keep up with hers she is going to have to give up her job. Ha ha… :)

I smiled when I read how you blush when the spotlight comes your way en masse. Like you I prefer one on one contact. I find it more satisfying even if it is slower.

Thanks for your awesome comment! :) Have a great weekend.

  7. Hi Marcus interesting analogy – to take it one step further Does the size of the party relate to how many people you connect with? Personally I don’t ‘chase’ the numbers on Facebook as I find the quality of engagement dilutes – yet Twitter i am happy to randomly accumulate connections and the odd one sticks

There are so many differing opinions on the the most effective way to ‘party’ but being consistent and interactive I would rate as being important

    Thanks for sharing

  8. Marcus.. good question

I don’t know.. Facebook seems very crowded so I try to connect with people one on one as I go.. any relationship, no matter if it’s to 20 people or 2000 people.. is significant.

this is a great way to asses what we’re doing on social media.

    thanks

    Hi Hector,

Knowing why you want the relationship in the first place is a good start. Essentially we can only ever engage personally one on one so you are going about it the best way in my opinion.

    Thanks for the comment. :)

  9. Hey Marcus,

My style is more like the “Individual Influencer” this is how I always worked a room full of people. It is very effective for me. Whenever you can be one on one with someone you can get more personal with them.

    Have a great weekend…

  10. Marcus,

I tend to go from one extreme to the other mass influencer to wall flower.

I guess its all about my particular mindset and energy levels for that day.
