Do you ever wonder why you keep on setting goals and not achieving one in particular? Maybe you have more than one that falls into this category? Perhaps all of them?

In the second part of the 4th step in The Secret Code of Success: 7 Hidden Steps to More Wealth and Happiness, Noah St John deals with this age old problem in more detail.

He suggests that the reason you set goals and don’t reach them is not because you’re not good enough, not smart enough, or not capable enough to get what you want.

Rather there’s a strong possibility that what you’re going after is something you don’t really want at a sub conscious level or/and your goals are impossible, outdated or unrealistic.

If you think this might describe your situation with even just one of your goals and you continue to stay on your current goal treadmill then you can be sure of one thing – you’ll get more of the same.

Or you can do things differently but before you can do this you need to change your goal blueprint.

To do this Noah St John suggests what he calls…

Goal Replacement Surgery

Simply put this means releasing goals that are no longer serving you and giving yourself permission to go after what you really want.

As you know a surgeon does not cut off a limb until there is a reason to do so and he only knows to do this after conducting a thorough examination.

goal

Time for you to do your own goal replacement surgery check up.  Get your list of written goals out and consider these questions:

1. Do I Have Goals That Belong to Someone Else That Need to go?

An obvious example of this is when people become doctors because everybody in the family is a doctor.

Usually these are goals that are handed down to us by someone else. They are someone else’s good ideas!

Look at your goals carefully and decide whether each of them really is you goal.

A good way to do this is to drill down on each of your goals by first asking “Why do I want to achieve this?”

Don’t stop there though…  After each of response, ask “But why?”  and keep going…. really examine why you have the goals you do.

Should you discover that you have some goals that belong to someone else,  simply let them go.

2. Do I Have any Impossible Goals That Need to go?

These are goals that cannot be achieved. You’re unlikely to have any on your list but that’s because they form part of your unwritten goals. This is because they are subconscious.

Here are some examples:

“Make my spouse/partner love me more”

“Make everybody happy”

“Have a 100% yes rate to my opportunity proposition.”

“Get everybody to like me”

“The reason we beat ourselves up for not reaching these impossible goals is because they lie in our Subconscious Mind, and that’s what we’re unknowingly reacting to. That’s why the purpose of Goal Replacement Surgery is to make that which has been subconscious, conscious—so you can examine your hidden, no-longer-valid goals and, if need be, let them go.”    Noah St John

This is an ongoing process. As you make subconscious goals conscious and you realize they are impossible, let them go.

3. Do I Have any Unrealistic Goals That Need Some Attention?

You may have heard that it’s a good idea to set big goals but what if the goal is so big that at a subconscious level you keep telling yourself that you’ll never achieve it? That’s right, you never will.

I suggest you have big dreams and realistic stepped up goals to take you to where you want to go.

There’s no point in having a goal of making $10 000 a month when you currently make $200. The gap between where you are and where you want to go is too big. The reality of your current situation will be too strong vibrationally.

It’s most unlikely that you will be able to easily increase your energy vibration to the level required to get you to this place any time soon.

This means the goal will be on your list for a long, long time. Maybe forever….  Eventually you will become discouraged because you are not achieving it and the more this happens, the less likely it is that you ever will.

Rather if you currently earn $200 a month, try to double this next month ($400) then double this the next month ($800) then double that…. You get the picture?

When you achieve each little goal it helps you to feel good and that helps you to achieve the next one. Before you know it you will have trained yourself to the point of increasing your vibration sufficiently so that you can achieve your dreams.

If you have any unrealistic goals, give them some loving surgery now….

4. Do I have any Outdated Goals That Need to go?

The “But why” process I explained in No1 above will help you to know if you have any outdated goals.

These are goals that may have been important at one time but no longer are. Since there’s no reason for them to stay on your list, let them go.

For a fuller discussion on this topic which includes considering why it’s essential to know what one’s life principles or values are to be able to set effective goals, I suggest you read this section in Noah St John’s book.

Be Happy!

  1. Hi Marcus,

I have learned to set smaller goals while still keeping the overall or ultimate goal in mind and so far it serves me well. I’ve also let go of some outdated ones I no longer have any use for.

I think we’ve got to keep in mind that our goals will change with the circumstances we are in and that this is perfectly okay.

Great topic again! Thanks for sharing!

    Hi Ilka,

You make a great point that our goals will always be changing so it is necessary to simply be aware of this and then we will make sure they are congruent with the actions we are taking.

Thanks for your support Illka and have a great weekend.

  2. Nice post, Marcus. You’ve pointed out to me that I definitely need to do some goal tending here. lol

What I like is that I can prune them back or even get rid of them to make more space for the new and improved goals.

    Thanks,

Yes it’s a bit like cleaning out a closet I guess. You leave what you need and throw out what you don’t. It’s always a good feeling to de-clutter! :)

I appreciate you taking the time to comment here Peggy! :)

  3. Hey Marcus,

Powerful post. Do I have any outdated goals that need to go?

This boils down to reviewing your goals regularly. That’s the only way you can determine whether you still have irrelevant goals or you have goals that need more of your attention.

There will also be a room for improvement.

Taking stock of your goals will help you to propel your business and life to the next level of success.

    Thanks for the inspiration, Marcus.

    All the best,

    Hi Mavis,

I always appreciate your input here, thank you.

Sometimes we don’t stop long enough to really evaluate our goals because we’re too busy trying to achieve them.

As you rightly suggest, if we make a habit of reviewing our goals regularly then we should always have current, relevant goals for ourselves.

    Have an awesome weekend.

  4. Hi Marcus,

I wanted to take a moment to thank you for your keen, insightful breakdown of this book. So much of Noah’s philosophy seems to be based on the fact that our experience proceeds out of the subconscious, so it makes absolute sense to me to attack things at a subconscious level. Your posts have been uber helpful ;)

I like 3. I enjoy setting goals that seem outlandish to most but I really do enjoy attracting these goals and feel that they should become a reality for me. I’m light about them and I can feel them lining up for me. On the other hand, the moment I feel that something is impossible, I drop it, for if I can’t accept something at a conscious level I know darn well I won’t be able to accept it at a subconscious level.

Thanks again and enjoy your weekend!

    Hi Ryan,

I appreciate your feedback on this series. :)

You make a really important point when you say that when you feel something is not possible then you drop it.

This feeling is something we all have to do ourselves.. Some people may easily feel it is possible to earn $10 000 a moth while others not.

This just emphasizes the point that you can’t have someone else’s goals.

Whether you can can achieve a goal or not is a totally personal matter. It does not mean anything that someone else has achieved it.

Where do we stand vibrationally is all that matters.

Thanks for highlighting this important point Ryan.

    Have a great weekend. :)

  5. Hi Marcus,

Big goals are achieved by doing small achievable tasks. Ofcourse goals should be realistic there is no point in setting unrealistic goals (I want to have wings to fly to mars…just half kidding). And I suffered from big goal making syndrome because I use to set big goals not focusing on small ones or not chunking them. Great point if you make $200 then focus on making $400 and then move on.

Thanks for the insight on Goal Making.

Hey Lali so I take it you’re only looking to get one wing first then?? LOL See you on Mars but we’ll do it in chunks like you say.

Thanks for adding to the discussion Lali.

  6. The thought of releasing a goal wasn’t something that entered my mind as I was reading this, but you know what? I can see that working.

Especially if the goal you are after is just not working.

Thanks for this insight, you opened my eyes. ;)

    Hi Jerome,

Amazing how much power there is in “letting go”. It’s not something that comes that easily to us either.

  7. Marcus,

Turning your subconscious goals into conscious goals and letting go if need be….I like the idea.
I also think that our definition of what a goal is, are often very limited, which is why we fail to recognize a subconscious goal as a goal.
    I need to do some soul-searching! :-D

Thank you all for your thoughtful posts on the subject of Goal Replacement Surgery.

It’s funny how we think we own our goals until we are brave enough to consider that we might not.

I know I have been looking at some of my goals in a totally different way since working with your material.

Thank you for sharing your work Noah. I regard it as one of my blessings every day.

  9. ..A key reason that they feel this way is that they havent spent enough time thinking about what they want from life and havent set themselves formal goals. Youll also quickly spot the distractions that can so easily lead you astray… It focuses your acquisition of knowledge and helps you to organize your time and your resources so that you can make the very most of your life…By setting sharp clearly defined goals you can measure and take pride in the achievement of those goals and youll see forward progress in what might previously have seemed a long pointless grind.

Thanks for your comment Jeanette. I agree with you although refining one’s goal setting is a process that comes with expereience. As we set goals we think we want and then disocver we didn’t so we learn through the contrast what it is we want and so we can then set a better goal.
