I know there’s more than one way to use Facebook and other social media sites when it comes to business but I focus on using these to build personal relationships, period.
In a previous post I explained how to go through your current Facebook friends and make personal contact with them all – Why you Want Your Facebook Friends to Come to Your Funeral.
For me this continues to be an enlightening and often rewarding exercise.
One of the most important skills to have in business is that of being organized because it saves us time. This is our most valuable resource since it can never be replaced.
If you’re going to communicate with your Facebook friends personally then you want to be organised. Facebook makes this very easy, allowing us to organize our friends according to user created lists. It’s no different to implementing any standard filing system.
The first step is to decide on the lists you want to use which will be determined by your type of business and your goals. The idea is that all friends start on one list and then move lists according to how the relationships develop.
I add all new friends to my ”First Contact” list. I have a list for each new month. When I add a new friend I send them a personal email inviting them to interact with me.
If I don’t hear from them after three months, I remove them as well as the list for the month of first contact so that I have more space for new friends.
If they do respond then I move them to my next list which is called “Networking”. From there they could be moved to a group list like “Network Marketers” or “Affiliate Marketers” or some other kind of list specific to their relationship with me.
The idea is that by doing this you will always know exactly where you are in the relationship building journey with each of your friends.
Besides using lists to organize your friends on Facebook, these can also be used to target privacy settings. You can also filter your view of each list’s stream of activity separately on the home page.
How to create friend lists:
- Go to the “Friends Page”. Click on the Account drop-down at the top of any page, and then click on “Edit Friends.”
- Click the Create New List button at the top of the page to create a new list, or type the name of a friend in the left-side search field to add a friend to an existing list. You can also click on an existing friend lists on the left-side of the page, and then click on the Edit List button.
- If you have more than two friend lists, you can easily add or remove friends from lists by using the drop-down menu that appears next to their names on the “All Friends” tab of the Friends page.
- When confirming a new friend you will be given the opportunity to add to them to a list.
I know this may sound a tad overly organized but I find it works extremely well.
Do you use Facebook lists and if so how?
Be Happy!

I think this time I need to really sit down and organize my friends list to make things more easier and organized. I’m also thinking of experimenting with the ‘profile to business page migration tool’ but I’m not sure how profitable it’ll be. Social networking has brought many new developments which makes our work so much easier and the more improved the features the better.

Good Grief Marcus. How organized are you?
To be honest, I do not utilize Facebook properly. I really need to get the show on the road. I have a number of friends… who are personal friends who probably couldn’t give a flying (insert adjective) about my business.
Then of course I have networking friends, and obviously potential partners.
I am curious, by making these ‘lists’ will it exclude personal freinds from being bombarded with business related links and likes?
Thanks Marcus for your post. you have inspired me to get my FB act together.

I know how to make friends list, but I’ve no idea on how can I get such kind of benefit from friend list.
I just have my FB account and there is no such big use, and you’re using it to its extreme extent.
thanks Mate.

Hi,
Appreciate your comment. It’s funny I have used lists a bit for a while and then when I started using them as I’ve described in this post and started telling people what I was doing, most had no idea they could even use lists. That’s what promoted the post.
Appeciare your comment.

GREAT POST – I often find that I have friends on my page that I don’t know where they came from or who they are. Not that I invite random people in, well, I do, but it would be so nice to know where I met them.
This would help me tremendously. Then I’d have a better idea of how to communicat with them.
Thank you,
