In a recent post I asked, How do you get the Attention of a Goldfish? According to the BBC, the nature of web browsing has reduced our once 20 minute attention span to that of just 9 seconds, the same as goldfish.
I’ve been wondering ever since writing the post, why anybody would want to know what the attention span of a goldfish is and how the heck they actually determined this.
Since this is really another topic all together, perhaps it’s best left there, unless of course you have some warped goldfish fetish or the whole idea appeals to your creative genius, in which case feel free to express your contribution in the comments section. ![]()
So if this is true I wanted to know what we could do to get the attention of others in as short a time as 9 seconds when using social media.
The post led to some lively discussion so I want to share some of the comments that were made. If you didn’t read the original post you may want to do this first.
Who Needs Goldfish Anyway?
Oliver Tausend said:
“I don’t want goldfish as customers and business partners, that’s why I don’t target them. I want people as customers and business partners who have a longer attention span. The question is also: Are goldfish able to commit to a cause and to focus ? Or do their commitments and focuses change as well every 9 seconds ? Then it’s not a commitment or a focus.”
Adrienne was in agreement, saying:
“I certainly don’t want people in my business that have that little of an attention span. I want people who engage, share, ask questions and are out there as well.”
Good points raised . A lot depends on who you are looking for. If you are building a network marketing Internet type business then ultimately you’re looking for business partners who are in it for the long term, since this is the only way you’ll ever be truly successful in acquiring residual income which is really what this type of business is all about.
So does this mean affiliate marketers for instance are more goldfish seekers than network marketers?
It all comes down to understanding that if you want to connect effectively with people then….
Don’t try and Grab the Attention of Everyone
This was the core of Dr Bob Clarke’s comment:
“To be successful and stand out, you must decide what small fraction of the Internet community you want to sway, and then write or talk specifically for them.
Second, do your homework. Don’t assume you know anything about your target market. Ask questions and listen carefully. Once you have an idea of what they need and want, and what their trigger points are, then you can write headlines directly to those needs.”
So to summarize so far –
Before you even think about how to attract attention you must know why you want their attention. Then you’ll know what kind of person you’re looking for so you can create the right message.
Once you know whether you want the attention of goldfish or others you’re ready to create messages to achieve your goal. Here are some additional ideas from other readers about how to connect with your target audience more effectively.
Show up
“One way to start being more fascinating, these days, is to keep showing up. There are enough fly-by-night, viral campaigns but those who endure and are reliably “there” will WIN people’s attention.” Jon Alford
Enchant and Engage:
[I capture people's attention by] “….writing posts that draw them out, cause them to reflect, cause them to expand their thinking, to dream bigger, to know it’s safe to dream again.” Janet Calaway
Be Controversial:
I have a few controversial topics that I want to write about because I believe that these would be more compelling and engaging to readers. Justin Mazza
Move People to Action:
“Making an impression by moving people into action wherever you show up is a wonderful way to grab people’s attention.” Ryan Biddulph
Build Relationships as a Priority:
“I think once the relationship is built with a gold fish then the 9 seconds doesn’t become a problem anymore.” Chelsea Thomas
Be Yourself
“Be like Justin Bieber or Nicki Minaj… ok, be yourself’ Gabriella – The Stepford Wife
“…it’s more important for me to be authentic. I think that doing so, it will help me stand out’. Diana Simon
Be Funny
“I would say, “be engaging.” In short, “be witty.” I think the rules of face-to-face communication can also be applied in the social blogosphere.” Elmar Sandyck
Be Everywhere
“I see the same faces sharing either as a guest poster or a commenter and this technique I should say is a brilliant way of getting noticed.” Darin
Many agreed with my starter suggestions in the post to ‘be big’ and make people feel something and just as many commented on the title of that post so creating catchy headlines will definitely also attract attention.
Thank you to everybody who left a comment on that first post.
If you’d like to have more of your say then I’ll meet you in the comments section here too.
Please share this post with your followers on your social networks because they may want to join in the discussion. Thank you.
Be Happy!

Hi Marcus, your collection of quotes regarding the goldfish are excellent. In my opinion I rather have people or a business partner with commitment than a gold first with no commitment.

I guess it all depends on what one is looking for but I agree that those who stay around no matter what are best for business. It is a well known fact that it is cheaper to hold on to existing customers than looking for new ones.

Love what you’ve done here Marcus, My hat is truly off to you for the way you’ve pulled together all these inputs from your last post.
The thing that strikes me is that the answer seems to be different for different people. For instance The Network Marketer wants to filter out the Goldfish. But the Marketer wants to grab the attention of the same fish…
But perhaps even quality MLM prospects have a reduced attention span when it comes to digital information. Even the most focused individuals have to filter out so much to find what they want, I still believe in the core concept of grabbing their attention in 9 seconds being a good thing!
Thanks as always. And to think that I once wrote a post entitled ‘MLM Lead Generation has nothing to do with Fish’. Little did I know…

Hi Jym,
Your post title re fish gave me a good laugh!
I agree with you about finding a way to grab people’s attention ASAP.
As you say Jym there is so much noise out there that it may well be possible that even the most committed and focused individuals are battling with distraction.
I regard myself as committed but am constantly pulling myself into line when it comes to distractions. I think I am just too curious for my own good. Ha ha
Regardless of concentration span I believe we have to do what we can to stand out. Big companies have the budget to help them but individual entrepreneur like us who are relying on our personal brands to impress had better find a way of connecting with our audience if we want to be heard.
Appreciate your feedback Jym.

Hey Marcus!
Interesting.. I never knew our attention span had become that of a goldfish (and I remember they had 3seconds of attention so we have 3 times more attention than them!)
Anyways, I think if we knew who we were targeting and providing them the information that they were seeking for, they would have unlimited attention as long as what they were getting meant something to them.
It is like trying to push something down a person’s throat when they dont want what you are offering – The best way to really get yourself killed!
Make sure what you are offering is of value, and what people are seeking and you will have their undivided attention!

Hi Darren,
You hit on something very important and that is to deliver content that will get the attention of our target audience.
When the message has value and is desired then attention will not be an issue.
Thanks for adding value here Darren. Much appreciated.

Great post Marcus and thanks for including my comment as well.
I agree, everyone had good points. It might be that your headline didn’t grab those particular people are their time is much more valuable to them so they skim over the things that don’t appeal to them at that time. Either way, you definitely want to appeal to your target audience so it’s really important to know who that is before you jump in head first.
I love the comment section almost as much as I love the post. Everyone has their own opinion on topics and sometimes we need to hear what others think in order to look at this in a different way. So thank you so much for sharing everyone’s thought in this post. Great job my friend. Excellent!

Thanks for sharing those awesome comments! I agreed with them about not wanting the attention of goldfish.
Although I am both an affiliate marketer & a network marketer, I don’t want to sell something to someone that they aren’t going to use because they have already moved on to something else.

Marcus, aloha. Love the way you brought in everyone’s comments. Reading through them is certainly “proof positive” that one sieze does not fit all. Or, in keeping with the theme, you need more than one type of bait.
Since we know “like attracts like,” if we are ourselves–fishy or not–we will attract those who are most like us. How that relationship develops and what happens in the future from a business perspective, is largely dependent on what we do after we initially capture that attention.
Marcus, I have absolutely loved the images that you have used on these goldfish posts. The visuals make a terrific post even better.

It’s so darn easy to fall into the habit of only focusing on traffic numbers and lose track of who we really want to work for and with.

It’s very important to know who you are looking for while you build a business..the time will teach us how to be more selective and choose only partners who meet our expectations. The best way to do that is to fullfil these expectations yourself first. How?
Start being totally dedicated, interacting and getting noticed.

Thanks Marcus.Your post was a very valuable resource.

What a nice surprise to read about the comment I made in this post! Thanks for featuring it. Now, I’m pressured to deliver something funny! haha
Just to reiterate on the point about being “funny” to hold one’s attention; we really shouldn’t underestimate the power of humor in everything that we do especially in business. This is one skill, which isn’t really available to everyone, that should also be kept to a minimum if you want to be taken seriously but at the most appropriate times and situations, humor could really make you stand out.
Good feature about the comments made, Marcus!

HI Marcus, you might already know I read this post last night, then read your last post … and again tomorrow after my internet connection started to behave again. Sorry for the slow ‘comment’.
I was thinking last night about Goldfish. ((thanks for that)) – HA HA
I think we all have to use the right bait to find ‘dolphins’…. dolphins know they are cute, they are smart, they are trainable. I suppose though we need to go for the Goldfish mentality though and capture their attention in as little time as possible.
the problem is Marcus, we have to be smart fisherpeople!!
There is so much bait out there that we absolutely must stand out and continuously strive to provide as much value as we can all the time.
I do believe that things do come to fruition but we have to, as you say, be as big as we can (or fantastic) and stand out amongst the rest in this sea of info.
This was a very thought provoking post Marcus. Every time I feed the fish at my house… I’m going to be reflecting on posting. LOL
