Business Personal Development – What To Do When Things Turn Sour!
I’m sure you’ve heard it before…. “when you get lemons, make lemonade” which is exactly what I’ve been doing for the last few days. In this business personal development post I’d like to tell you how I did this since there’s every chance you’ll need to do so sometime soon.
Towards the end of last week I had two bigger than usual challenges come my way. First my primary company disappeared overnight and a day later my computer’s hard drive decided to say goodbye too!
In reflecting about these two fairly major events I found myself thinking, “Great. They say things come in -” and right there in mid thought I stopped myself very swiftly. I’m sure you know where the rest of this was headed.
“What a load of crap. How the heck did you slip in here thought? Get out of here right now. Go on, get out.”
And it did.
So it seems “complacency”, that feeling of quiet pleasure or security, often while unaware of some potential danger, had definitely been trying to make itself at home in my life. It’s a devious character and often leads to things turning very sour in our lives.
We must be on the look out for it all the time. However, because it likes the dark corridors of our unconscious, we are not always able to do this. We must be prepared for it so that it cannot become responsible for derailing our goals without us realizing. The way to do this? When lemons show up, make lemonade at every turn. You do this by having the mindset to do so, taking control and taking action.
My primary company looked to be in very good health so I thought I had found an income stream for life. Wrong! Just like everybody else I was taken completely by surprise. Here’s the thing though, I did not panic since my business was not dependent on this company only. Why would I hand over total of control of my future to one company?
My business includes a number of income streams and is centered around me so when iLearning Global was no longer an option, the rest of my business continued to tick along very nicely and hey presto I had lemonade. This is what I teach others to do with their businesses too. In short always take control and always have a plan B .
When my computer hard drive died it was a very unexpected shock. I market primarily online so the impact was somewhat severe. We tend to become complacent about technology but it can fail at any time and we need to be prepared for this should it happen. How did I turn this lemon into lemonade?
By having the mindset to stay calm and of course by having ensured that I had backed up my data regularly and by knowing who to call to assist me with the technical issues. It has been very inconvenient and has set me back by two days but the fact that my computer died did not mean that this was the end of my business. I was able to retrieve my data and do what I needed to do to get back up and running as quickly as possible. Meanwhile my business has continued to tick along very nicely even though my system was down. This is what I teach others to do – take control and always have a plan B.
So back to my almost played out thought about things happening in threes! Being completely in the moment I was able to catch myself and get rid of the nonsense that this thought is. Being prepared allowed me to take control and stop an untrue thought from being put into motion.
Challenging events, thoughts and actions will come our way at every opportunity. We either empower ourselves to make lemonade when this happens or we find ourselves sucking for far too long on the lemons. I know what I choose to do, how about you?
My goal? Helping you achieve yours!
